Rwanda will have no crews competing in the Tanzanian round of the African Rally Championship (ARC), with professional commitments and the high cost of participation among the challenges affecting local drivers. The 2026 Mkwawa Rally of Tanzania, scheduled for October 2–4, is the fourth and final round of the FIA African Rally Championship. The event will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania. Media reports indicate that 23 cars are expected to take part, including eight eligible to score FIA ARC championship points. Rwanda, however, will have no representatives on the start line despite ambitions among some drivers to compete throughout the continental championship. The Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) secretary-general, Ange-François Cyatangabo, confirmed that no Rwandan crews would participate in the Tanzanian round, explaining that some drivers have important professional commitments. The decision also comes as drivers face the financial demands of competing in international rally events, which can require significant spending on vehicles, spare parts, logistics and technical support. Christian Kanangire, who finished top in the ARC2 category at the Mountain Gorilla Rally, said he had hoped to represent Rwanda in the final round, particularly because he believed he still had a chance of winning the championship trophy. “After the Safari, we had hoped to do all the ARC rounds, as had been agreed with the Federation (RAC),” Kanangire said. “However, probably due to lack of funding or sponsorship, we are not participating in this last round. I was all-round ready to fight for that trophy.” Kanangire’s comments highlight the difficulties drivers can face in sustaining participation across an entire international rally season. For drivers, missing a round can mean losing an opportunity to collect championship points and compete for a continental title. Queen Kalimpinya, another Rwandan rally driver, also pointed to the cost of competing as a major consideration. “I would have really loved to take part, but the cost is quite high, and with the budget currently available, it would be difficult to justify the investment, especially since securing first place isn’t guaranteed,” she said. Her comments illustrate the financial calculations drivers must make when deciding whether to enter a competition, particularly when the cost of participation is high relative to the potential sporting return. While funding remains a concern for some drivers, the RAC secretary-general also cited professional commitments as a reason for Rwanda’s absence from the Tanzania event. The different circumstances show that participation in the ARC depends not only on a driver's ability to compete but also on financial resources and the availability of time to follow the championship calendar. Rwanda has sought to maintain its presence in regional and continental motorsport competitions, with the ARC providing drivers with an opportunity to compete against crews from other African countries. However, sustained participation across multiple rounds requires careful planning, financial resources and support for teams throughout the season. The RAC's confirmation that no Rwandan crews will attend the Tanzania round highlights the challenges facing drivers seeking to compete consistently in the continental championship and the importance of financial and logistical support for future campaigns.
