Police VC are reportedly in the final stages of negotiations with libero Jules Niyigena and middle blocker John Nkurunziza as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2026/27 volleyball season
The transfer window remains open for clubs to negotiate deals with free agents, with several players becoming available following Kepler VC’s decision to withdraw from the league for unexplained reasons.
Police VC have moved quickly to take advantage of the situation, approaching the experienced duo as they reshape their squad. The club has already signed young setter Nalon Enzo Ganza, while Brazilian outside hitter Matheus Bettim has also returned to the team.
A source close to the club told Times Sport that Niyigena has already joined Police VC in training, with ongoing talks indicating that the libero could remain at the club until 2028.
Nkurunziza, meanwhile, was part of the Rwanda men’s national team that competed at the 2026 African Men’s Volleyball Championship in Tunisia. The middle blocker had been in talks with Gisagara VC before leaving for the continental tournament, but the Southern Province-based club moved quickly to sign Bienvenue Rukundo, who left Rwanda Energy Group (REG) VC.
That left Nkurunziza available for another club, and Police VC have now identified him as a potential addition as they look to fill gaps in their squad.
The law enforcers are seeking a replacement for libero Saduru Manzi, who returned to APR VC. Meanwhile, long-serving player Placide Sibomana is reportedly set to move away from playing duties and join the club’s technical staff as a physical trainer.
Nkurunziza has consequently emerged as one of the players Police VC are considering to strengthen their middle-blocking options.
What Niyigena and Nkurunziza could bring to Police
Niyigena was named the best libero of the 2025/26 Rwanda Volleyball League season after helping Kepler VC win a bronze medal following their victory over Gisagara VC in the third-place playoff.
His career began to gain momentum in 2019 when he featured for UTB VC. That same year, he was named Best Libero at the CAVB Zone V Championship.
He later played for Gisagara VC and REG VC before joining Kepler VC. His experience with several of Rwanda’s top clubs could make him an important addition to Police VC if the deal is completed.
Nkurunziza started his career at Gisagara VC and was part of the team that won the national league title in 2019. That same year, he helped the Rwandan club side secure a historic bronze medal in continental competition.
After joining Kepler VC, Nkurunziza became one of the key players who helped the club reach the league final in 2024, its debut season in the top flight. He then played an important role as Kepler maintained its consistency over the following two seasons, winning bronze medals in both campaigns.
Police VC still have room for another recruit after opposite attacker Angiro Gideon mutually parted ways with the club.
