Not every story needs 10 seasons to earn its ending. One of the best television series of the last decade tells its whole story in a handful of episodes, then gets out before it overstays its welcome. That makes for ideal weekend viewing, no cliffhanger finale, no year-long wait for a renewal that might never come. Just a beginning, a middle and an end, all inside 48 hours. Here are six series short enough to start on Friday night and finish by Sunday. Chernobyl When a nuclear reactor explodes in Soviet Ukraine, a team of scientists and officials race against denial, bureaucracy and radiation to contain a disaster that threatens to poison a continent. Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard and Emily Watson lead the 2019 miniseries, created by Craig Mazin for HBO across five episodes. It swept ten Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series. The Queen's Gambit An orphaned girl discovers a prodigious talent for chess, climbing through the ranks of a male-dominated world while battling addiction and the weight of her own genius. Anya Taylor-Joy stars alongside Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Moses Ingram in the 2020 Netflix series, written and directed by Scott Frank across seven episodes. It became one of the platform's most-watched limited series and won eleven Emmy Awards. Adolescence After a 13-year-old boy is arrested for murder, his family, therapist and community are forced to confront the online world that shaped him, in real time and often in a single unbroken shot. The 2025 Netflix series stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty across four episodes, co-created by Graham and Jack Thorne. Its single-take format drew widespread critical acclaim. Beef A road-rage incident between two strangers spirals into an all-consuming feud that exposes the resentment, ambition and loneliness simmering beneath both of their lives. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong headline the 2023 Netflix series across ten episodes, created by Lee Sung Jin. It won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series. The Night Of A young man's ordinary night out ends with him charged for murder, as an overworked lawyer and a hardened detective peel back a case built on assumption rather than fact. Big Little Lies (Season One) Three mothers in a wealthy coastal town hide secrets behind their polished lives, secrets that surface after a local murder pulls their community apart.
