In April 1994, Rwanda witnessed a failure of humanity as a result of the divisive ethnic identities that were imposed by Belgian colonial rule. This was the Genocide against the Tutsi. The debate surrounding African identity has long been shaped by aggressive historical efforts to strip Africans of their essential rights to self-determination and self-identity. For generations, conventional interpretations have reduced the essence of being African to external perceptions, racial categorisations, and skin color. Historically, the label black carried severe negative connotations, symbolising themes such as malevolence, misfortune, sorrow, death, and bad omens. Colonial legacies further disrupted traditional social structures by imposing European authority and fueling divisive political dynamics, such as the tribal politics of Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda. These oppressive interactions produced profound psychological and cultural alienation, leading to a significant loss of collective identity in Africa and culminating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. While some scholars argue that a singular African identity is unattainable given the continent's immense diversity of traditions, languages, and cultures, failing to acknowledge historical narratives risks perpetuating a colonially imposed identity. Africa’s historical narrative has long been shaped by a complex interplay of external influences including colonial rule alongside Islamic and Euro-Christian ideologies compounded by misleading portrayals that frame African history as primarily a story of Western exploration. Historical impositions such as colonialism, slavery, and the reductionist labelling of Africans merely as black have distorted global perceptions, fostering a persisting collective identity crisis. Today, amidst the multifaceted pressures and opportunities of globalisation, Africa's identity faces significant threats, creating an urgent need to preserve and define its heritage in an interconnected world. To reclaim African identity requires returning to fundamental concepts of human dignity and ontology. Human identity is grounded in intrinsic, universal worth, asserting that all individuals possess equal value simply by virtue of being human. At an ontological level, African selfhood is fundamentally understood in relation to others, a concept of being-with-others where the community shapes the individual. This social orientation reflects what Mwalimu Julius Nyerere termed African brotherhood, which finds its roots in the traditional extended family system. Aligned with this, Rwanda’s Agaciro philosophy provides a transformative framework centered on dignity, self-reliance, and self-worth. Rather than relying on racial categorisation, Agaciro advocates for an African identity grounded in shared human values, cultural ownership, and collective memory. Agaciro philosophy serves as a crucial anchor, moving the definition of African identity beyond narrow racial categorisations and toward shared human dignity, self-reliance, and intrinsic worth. By restoring egalitarian principles and honoring historical realities, AGACIRO would empower Africans across the continent and the diaspora to reclaim their own narratives, resist marginalisation, and assert a holistic identity grounded in humanity. However, sustaining this rich identity requires active engagement across society, beginning with families and community leaders who instill foundational moral values including solidarity, reverence for the sacred, generosity, and hospitality in future generations. This internal foundation fuels a broader African renaissance that unites governments, educators, artists, and grassroots communities to ensure that African identity remains dynamic, resilient, and influential on the global stage. The quest for African identity ultimately transcends the mere recovery of lost heritage; it is a bold assertion of belonging, dignity, and self-determination within the global village. Identity is a fundamental principle of existence. Color is a traditional metaphysical attribute of matter and accident, used to differentiate one entity from another. However, human beings are not objects to be differentiated by color. Nevertheless, 32 years down the road, we are talking of a unified Rwanda, a unified people; we are talking of dignity; we are talking of Agaciro.
