The AFC/M23 movement has declared three days of mourning after fire killed 26 in Bukavu, as investigations continue to establish the cause and circumstances of the outbreak. The fire broke out on Thursday morning in Tshimpunda neighbourhood, Kadutu Commune, and spread to Mosala Primary School in Kadutu and Nongo Primary School in Bagira Commune, leaving 24 dead. AFC/M23 Spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said the death toll rose to 26 on Friday. The mourning period runs from Fridaythrough Sunday. The national and AFC/M23 flags will be flown at half-mast at public buildings and institutions located in the areas under the rebel movement’s control. In a statement on Friday, Kanyuka said the movement expressed sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Bukavu. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery. Kanyuka called on residents to observe the mourning period “with calm, dignity, solemn reflection, and solidarity.” AFC/M23 urged people of goodwill and humanitarian organisations to contribute to assistance efforts for the victims and affected families. The movement called on the responsible authorities to “diligently pursue ongoing investigations” to establish “the exact causes and circumstances of this fire” and take the necessary measures based on the findings.
