There is a young African woman somewhere on this continent with an idea that could employ fifty people. She may be capable of building a company, inventing a product, running a factory, becoming a scientist, leading an institution, or transforming an industry. Yet, too often, our attention is drawn to whether she conforms to society's expectations rather than whether we are creating the conditions for her potential to flourish. That should concern us for reasons that go beyond gender. Africa has enormous ambitions for industrialisation, innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic transformation. We regularly discuss our mineral wealth, agricultural potential, and demographic dividend. But perhaps our greatest resource is still our people. If we are serious about competing in a rapidly changing global economy, we cannot afford to underdevelop a significant share of our human capital. This does not require us to dismiss culture, dignity, or social values. They matter. Culture can provide identity and guidance while still allowing people to grow beyond inherited expectations. African cultures themselves have never been static. They have evolved alongside our languages, economies, technologies, and institutions. The challenge is not choosing between culture and progress but distinguishing between values that strengthen society and attitudes that restrict human potential. The urgency becomes clearer when we consider how quickly the world is changing. Artificial intelligence is reshaping professions, technology is lowering barriers to global markets, new industries are emerging, and countries are competing aggressively for talent. While other economies are creating environments in which capable people can flourish, Africa cannot afford to spend disproportionate energy policing one another over matters that contribute little to our economic competitiveness. We sometimes describe this behaviour through the image of crabs in a barrel: whenever someone begins moving beyond familiar expectations, others pull them back toward what feels acceptable. Girls and women can experience this particularly strongly. A woman's appearance, confidence, relationships, or personal choices can attract enormous attention, while more consequential questions receive less scrutiny. Can she access quality education and capital? Can she own productive assets? Can she enter industries where women remain underrepresented? Can she build, fail, learn, and try again? These are not simply women's issues. They are economic questions. When women build businesses, create employment, earn incomes, develop technology, and participate fully in markets, the benefits extend beyond individuals. Families become more resilient, businesses grow, communities gain productive capacity, and economies expand. A society that continually asks women to make themselves smaller may eventually create an economy smaller than it could have been. This is also why our understanding of protection deserves closer examination. Protecting the African girl should mean ensuring that she can walk safely to school, receive a quality education, access healthcare, develop skills, and pursue opportunities without violence or exploitation. It should mean creating environments in which her potential is protected as fiercely as her dignity. Protection should expand her possibilities, not unnecessarily reduce them. Perhaps Africa needs to become more disciplined about what deserves our attention. Culture should be a foundation, not a ceiling. We can preserve what is valuable about who we are while questioning attitudes that prevent talented people from reaching their potential. The world will not wait for us to resolve every internal argument before moving forward. Other economies are building, competing, and developing their talent. The more consequential question, therefore, is not whether the African girl becomes everything society expects her to be. It is whether we are creating an Africa in which she can become everything she is capable of being. If we get that right, the dividend will be measured in stronger businesses, more jobs, greater innovation, more resilient families, and larger economies. When African girls rise, their families, communities, and economies rise with them—and ultimately, Africa rises too.
