The race for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or is officially underway, with some of football’s biggest names included among the 30 nominees for the prestigious individual award. Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Inter Miami star Lionel Messi headline a shortlist that brings together established superstars and a new generation of footballing talent. Yamal, still only 19, receives his third Ballon d’Or nomination after rapidly establishing himself among the leading players in world football. Mbappé, meanwhile, earns his ninth nomination, further underlining his consistency at the highest level. His move to Real Madrid has kept him at the centre of the Ballon d’Or conversation, while Messi returns to the shortlist after another influential chapter of his career in the United States. The list also features Erling Haaland, who receives his sixth nomination, England captain Harry Kane, nominated for the eighth time, and Jude Bellingham, another of Real Madrid’s key figures. Paris Saint-Germain are strongly represented, with Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes and Marquinhos among the nominees. Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí also earns his first nomination. Dembélé enters the race as the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, having claimed the 2025 award after playing a leading role in PSG’s historic Champions League triumph. Africa’s growing representation The 2026 awards also offer a significant platform for African football. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi is among the leading African contenders for the main prize, while Senegal’s Sadio Mané and several other African-born players feature among the wider nominees. In the Kopa Trophy race, which recognises the best young player, Côte d’Ivoire’s Yan Diomande, Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza are among the African talents nominated. Africa is also strongly represented in the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper. Cape Verde’s Vozinha, Morocco’s Yassine Bounou and Senegal’s Édouard Mendy have all been nominated, giving the continent three representatives in the category. With established stars, global superstars and emerging talents competing for recognition, the 2026 Ballon d’Or promises another closely watched contest. The winner will be announced in London on October 26.
