The family, not the school, government, or social media, must become Rwanda's first school of character again. The debate about the erosion of Rwandan culture and values is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. In my previous article, I argued that Rwanda's transition from hardship to peace and prosperity has created a new generational challenge: how do we preserve the resilience, discipline, responsibility, and communal spirit that helped previous generations survive and rebuild the country? Perhaps we have been looking for the answer in the wrong place. We talk about government programmes, civic education, schools, churches and the influence of social media. All these matter. But before a child becomes a student, citizen, employee, or leader, he or she is a son or daughter. The battle for values begins at home. Rwandan tradition understood this remarkably well. In traditional Rwanda, the family was not simply a place where children were fed and sheltered. It was the first school of life. Children learned through observation, participation, correction, storytelling, and daily responsibilities. The nuclear and extended family, together with the wider community, shared responsibility for shaping the child. The philosophy was captured in the old saying, “Uburere buruta ubuvuke,” which loosely translates to, “upbringing is more important than birth.” Another saying, “Igiti kigororwa kikiri gito,” reminds us that a tree is shaped while it is still young. The message is simple: character is not something we suddenly instill in an eighteen-year-old. It is cultivated over many years. Traditional Rwandan parents did not need smartphones, parenting manuals or government campaigns to teach their children responsibility. Children were given responsibilities appropriate to their age. They watched adults work. They accompanied parents. They listened to elders. They learned how to greet people, how to speak respectfully, how to share, how to serve visitors and how to behave in the community. The extended family also mattered enormously. An uncle, aunt, grandparent or neighbour could correct a child without the correction being interpreted as an intrusion. In the traditional model, society itself participated in raising children. That is one of the things modern Rwanda may need to rediscover. Have we outsourced parenting? Modern Rwandan parents face pressures their grandparents did not. Many work long hours. Some commute long distances. Others run businesses or hold demanding professional positions. But something else has happened. We may have gradually outsourced parenting. We send children to school and expect teachers to educate them. We take them to church and expect religious leaders to shape their morals. We send them to Itorero and expect civic education to produce responsible citizens. And increasingly, we hand them a smartphone and allow YouTube, Tik-Tok, Instagram and their peers to become silent teachers. Then we become surprised when the child comes home speaking, dressing, thinking, and behaving differently from what we expected. But what did we expect? A child cannot learn from a parent who is physically present but emotionally absent. The answer is not for parents to abandon their jobs or isolate their children from the modern world. That would be neither realistic nor desirable. The answer is to develop home-grown solutions suited to the Rwanda of today. Rebuild the family as a school of values As a first step, parents must deliberately spend time with their children. Not merely paying school fees, buying clothes, or phones, and food. But time. A family could establish one evening each week when phones and television are put aside, and parents and children talk. What happened at school? What did you learn? What did you do that made you proud? What mistake did you make? Who did you help? Parents could revive storytelling, not necessarily by repeating every tradition exactly as it was, but by telling children the stories of their grandparents, their families, Rwanda's history and the sacrifices that brought the family/nation to where it is today. Children should know where their parents’ background. They should know what their grandparents did for a living. They should understand that money does not simply appear from an ATM. They should see their parents working, saving, serving others, and solving problems. Most importantly, parents must model the values they want their children to acquire for Rwandans to remain Rwandans but with modernity. A parent cannot demand honesty from a child while routinely lying. A parent cannot demand respect while constantly insulting others. A parent cannot lecture a child about hard work while demonstrating a culture of entitlement. Children listen to our words, but they copy our lives. Perhaps one of the greatest losses in modern parenting is the disappearance of meaningful responsibility. Many parents work hard to give their children a life better than the one they had. This is understandable. But protecting children from every difficulty can deprive them of the opportunity to develop resilience. Children should have responsibilities at home. They can clean, make their beds, cook and can care for younger siblings. They can participate in family activities. Teenagers can be given small financial responsibilities and taught how to save, budget and work. This is not punishment; it is character formation. The objective is not to recreate the hardship our parents experienced. As I argued in the previous article, we should manufacture resilience, not suffering. Bring back the conversation Traditional Rwandan upbringing relied heavily on conversation—stories, proverbs, advice, and correction. Modern parents need to reclaim that space. Instead of allowing social media to answer every question our children have about relationships, money, sex, success, beauty, masculinity, femininity and happiness, parents should become the people children can talk to. A child who cannot discuss difficult things with a parent will eventually discuss them with somebody else. And the internet is always available. Rwanda does not necessarily need to import a parenting philosophy from Singapore, South Korea, Europe, or America to solve this problem. Some of the answers are already embedded in our own cultural memory. The traditional Rwandan family understood that raising a child was a collective responsibility. It understood that character had to be cultivated early. It understood that work taught dignity, that elders transmitted wisdom, that community reinforced behaviour and that parents had responsibilities beyond providing material needs. We do not need to return wholesale to the past. We need to recover what was good in the past and adapt it intelligently to the present. The modern Rwandan family can have smartphones and still have family conversations. Children can speak English and still speak Kinyarwanda. They can be global citizens and still know their roots. They can pursue individual ambitions while understanding their responsibilities to family and country. The choice is not between tradition and modernity. The choice is whether we will consciously transmit what is worth preserving. Government can organize Itorero. Schools can teach civic education. Churches can teach morality. But none of them can replace the everyday influence of a parent. If Rwanda wants a generation that is disciplined, compassionate, hardworking, patriotic, honest and responsible, the first classroom must once again be the home. And perhaps the most important question for every Rwandan parent today is not: “What kind of country are we leaving our children?” It is: “What kind of children are we preparing to inherit the country we have built?” Because ultimately, preserving Rwanda's values may not begin in Parliament, at school or in a government programme.
