Prince House-Giporoso-Masaka road expansion works commenced on Sunday, August 30, the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) announced.

The project aims to improve urban mobility, road safety, and connectivity and transport efficiency in the capital.

The project is the result of a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and the Government of the People’s Republic of China to advance transport infrastructure and support sustainable economic development.

"The project has a planned implementation period of 30 months, starting from August 30, 2026,” RTDA said.

Upon completion, the 10km project is expected to significantly improve mobility and connectivity, enhance road safety and transport efficiency, and facilitate the movement of people and goods along this strategic corridor.

"We also call upon road users, businesses and surrounding communities to cooperate with the temporary traffic arrangements throughout the construction period as we work together towards realizing the long-term benefits of this investment,” RTDA said.

Project works

The major construction works include a flyover and underpasses, interchanges, subgrade and pavement works, bridges and culverts, roadway lighting, drainage systems, and traffic-management infrastructure.

"The expansion of the existing corridor into a four-lane carriageway, together with the construction of interchanges, flyovers, underpasses and associated infrastructure, will enhance the road’s capacity to accommodate current and future transport demand,” RTDA said.

Alternative routes

Traffic-management deviation routes have already been identified by the City of Kigali in collaboration with RTDA and the Rwanda National Police.

The alternative-routes map covers a wider network around the project corridor, including connections around Giporoso Junction, Sonatube, Kimironko Bus Park, Zindiro, the Special Economic Zone, Ndera, Gasogi, Kabuga, Kicukiro, Busanza and other surrounding areas.

"Specific traffic arrangements may be adjusted as construction progresses and depending on prevailing traffic conditions,” RTDA said.
