King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV, who died on Thursday aged 34, was thrust into the spotlight as a three-year-old when he inherited the throne of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom following the death of his father. ALSO READ: King Oyo of Uganda’s Tooro dies aged 34 For nearly three decades, he remained one of Africa’s most recognisable traditional leaders, growing from a child monarch into a university graduate and an advocate for young people, education, women’s empowerment, HIV/AIDS awareness and environmental conservation. Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced his death on Thursday night, saying the King died at about 10 p.m. Ugandan time on August 27. His death came hours after the kingdom said he was in critical condition and appealed to the public to pray for him and avoid speculation or unverified information about his health. A throne inherited at three Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo became heir to the Tooro throne after the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Rwamuhokya Kaboyo Olimi III, on August 26, 1995. The three-year-old prince ascended the throne on September 12 that year and was later crowned King of Tooro, becoming the youngest reigning monarch in the world, according to the kingdom. His accession placed him at the head of a kingdom whose monarchy dates back to 1822 and whose history spans more than two centuries. Because of his age, his early years as monarch were overseen by regents responsible for his upbringing and the cultural affairs of the kingdom. Among those associated with his regency were Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya, Prince James Desmond Mugenyi and President Yoweri Museveni. Despite his royal status, Oyo’s childhood also involved ordinary experiences of school and friendship, although security and his position as king meant his education was conducted in carefully selected environments. He spent two years in London, where he attended preschool, before returning to Uganda. He later attended Aga Khan Primary School in Kampala from 1999 to 2004, before joining Kampala International School Uganda, where he completed his Advanced Level education between 2005 and 2009. At school, he developed interests in art, music, mathematics and swimming. He then moved to the United Kingdom to study Business Management at the University of Winchester from 2010 to 2013, graduating with a bachelor’s degree. Education remained one of the priorities of his reign, with the Tooro Kingdom describing it as a key tool for empowering the millions of people under his leadership. Advocacy As he grew older, Oyo took on a more active public role and used his position to champion issues affecting young people and communities in Tooro and beyond. He campaigned against HIV/AIDS, particularly among young people, and was appointed a global ambassador in efforts to end the epidemic by 2030. The kingdom says he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his work in HIV/AIDS advocacy. He was also involved in campaigns for children’s rights and worked with organisations including World Vision International. Together with Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, he championed girls’ education and women’s empowerment in Tooro. His public engagements increasingly extended beyond the kingdom. He advocated for peace and sought to bring African kings and cultural leaders together, and in 2023 he was named a United Nations Global Peace Ambassador and designated a Commander of the Noble Order of Global Peace Ambassadors. Championing youth, conservation Oyo’s interests were not limited to cultural affairs. In 2022, he led a royal expedition to the Rwenzori Mountains, climbing to about 16,000 feet to draw attention to climate change and environmental protection. The expedition also sought to promote mountaineering and the Rwenzori range as a tourism attraction. The expedition later featured in a National Geographic production that was premiered internationally in San Diego, California, in 2023. Closer to home, he commissioned an initiative to protect the River Mpanga, which runs through the heart of Fort Portal City. He also promoted agriculture through the establishment of a model farm intended to demonstrate responsible farming practices, regardless of the size or location of a person’s land. For young people, his agenda included sports and technology. He supported sporting initiatives across Tooro and commissioned an ICT centre in Fort Portal aimed at improving computer literacy and exposing young people to developments in information and communications technology. The King pushed for the establishment of an international university in Tooro to serve local and international students. International engagements Oyo also sought to give the institution of the monarchy a role in international engagement. He commissioned international special envoys to manage global affairs and relationships on behalf of the king and kingdom, described by the kingdom as the first such arrangement by a Ugandan monarch. He commissioned a Christian crusade in Fort Portal in 2023, described by the kingdom as the first of its kind to be led by a Tooro monarch. His international engagements included visits to the United States, where he received keys to several cities from their mayors. Throughout his reign, he maintained a working relationship with Uganda’s central government and President Museveni, with the kingdom saying the two institutions collaborated on initiatives aimed at supporting peaceful governance. The throne after Oyo Oyo’s death leaves the Tooro Kingdom preparing for a new monarch. In announcing the death, Prime Minister Rwomiire said the King had left behind a prince who would succeed him. He said the identity of the heir would be formally announced at the appropriate time, in line with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
