Rwandan centre-back Abdul Rwatubyaye has completed a move to North Macedonian side FC Shkëndija, returning to a league where he enjoyed some of the most successful spells of his career. The experienced defender joins Shkëndija ahead of the 2026/27 season after parting ways with Libyan club Al-Soqour, where he spent the previous campaign. The career of the 29-year-old, who has played in Rwanda, the United States, North Macedonia, Afghanistan and Libya. North Macedonia, however, is familiar territory for Rwatubyaye. The former Rayon Sports captain first joined FC Shkupi in 2021 and quickly established himself as a key member of the squad, helping the club win the 2021/22 Macedonian First League title. He later returned to Shkupi for a second spell before joining Brera Strumica, further strengthening his experience in North Macedonian football. That familiarity is expected to prove valuable as Shkëndija look to reinforce their defence with a player who already understands the demands of the league. Rwatubyaye arrives with more than a decade of experience at club and international level. He began his career at Isonga FC before joining APR FC, where he won domestic silverware and established himself as one of Rwanda’s promising young defenders. He later crossed the divide to join rivals Rayon Sports, where he became an influential figure. During his time with the Blues, Rwatubyaye helped the club win the Rwanda Premier League title and played a key role in their historic run to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup. In 2023, he captained Rayon Sports to the Peace Cup title, leading the club to a memorable victory over APR FC in the final before beginning another chapter abroad. Rwatubyaye has also played in the United States, turning out for Sporting Kansas City II, Colorado Rapids and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. His latest move to Shkëndija offers the experienced defender an opportunity to return to familiar surroundings and continue his career in European football.
