Eric Muhoza and Xaverine Nirere of Team Amani were crowned winners of the 2026 Umusambi Gravel Race on Saturday. Organised by Rwanda Cycling Federation in partnership with Rwanda the annual cycling event combines sport with environmental conservation and raises awareness about the protection of Rwanda’s grey crowned cranes. The race concluded on Saturday, with Muhoza and Nirere winning the men’s and women’s elite categories, respectively. The event brought together elite men and women, junior and amateur cyclists, as well as riders competing in the popular Matabaro, or “pneux ballons,” category. According to the 2026 census, Rwanda is home to 1,438 grey crowned cranes, including 378 found in the Rugezi Swamp—more than a quarter of the country’s total population. The wetland is also home to 741 species, including 197 plant species, 134 bird species and 14 reptile species, underscoring its importance as one of Rwanda’s key biodiversity areas. Muhoza claimed the men’s elite title after completing the 89km course in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 27 seconds. He finished 2 minutes and 59 seconds ahead of Banzi Bukhari of Twin Lakes Cycling Academy, while Kevin Dukuzumuremyi of Bugesera Cycling Team completed the podium in third place. “Racing in my home country is always something I look forward to, but more importantly, today we’re here to help conserve the environment. This shows how sport can make a positive impact on society,” Muhoza said.
