The Umusambi Gravel Race is returning for its fourth consecutive edition, with the annual cycling event set to once again combine sport and conservation while raising awareness about the protection of Rwanda’s more than 1,400 grey crowned cranes. Organised annually by the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY) in partnership with the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA), the race will take place on August 22, aiming to promote the conservation of the grey crowned crane, locally known as Umusambi, one of Rwanda’s most iconic bird species. The 2026 edition will take cyclists through the dirt roads of Burera and Gicumbi districts, which surround the Rugezi Swamp, one of the country’s most important wetlands and a key habitat for the grey crowned crane. ALSO READ: Protecting wildlife is an investment in the future The race will bring together cyclists ranging from teenagers to adults, as well as amateur riders competing in two categories based on their ability. Some will tackle a 50km distance, while others will compete over 89km. A third category will feature single-speed cyclists, who will race over 40km. Beyond the competition, the Umusambi Gravel Race seeks to celebrate progress made in environmental conservation and wildlife restoration in and around Rugezi Swamp. It also aims to continue educating communities about the importance of protecting wetlands and the wildlife they support, particularly the grey crowned crane.
