With 2026 past its halfway point, Rwanda's hip-hop scene has already produced a run of releases that reveal where the country's rap culture is heading. Across eight projects, artistes are drawing from older Rwandan records, experimenting with samples, blending rap with jazz, R&B and Afrobeats, and using personal stories to document where they are in their careers. Some of these projects have also helped move their creators into new stages of their careers, whether through stronger releases, bigger collaborations or a clearer artistic identity. Mugemanyi vs White Monkey Fred Mugemanyi, better known as White Monkey, returned August 7 with Mugemanyi vs White Monkey, his first major release after a lengthy hiatus. The Skank Nation pioneer released the project through Green Ferry Music, Dr. Nganji handled much of the production and served as mixing and mastering engineer. Babiche Papaya and Racine also feature. He uses trap, sampling and references to older Rwandan records to build a sound that feels contemporary while remaining tied to the country's musical past. On “Icupa,” he creates the character of a man unable to give up alcohol despite its effect on his life. “Nuwo” takes a more aggressive approach, with the rapper pushing his delivery to an almost shouted intensity. “Penetensiya” turns inward, reflecting on his struggles and personal experiences. More than a decade after his debut, the project places White Monkey back in the conversation around Kigali's rap scene. ALSO READ: Over 30 East African acts set for I Am Hip Hop Festival 2026 Umunyabigwi IV Og2tone released the fourth instalment of his Umunyabigwi series August 2, following recent attention around his use of older Rwandan music as a foundation for new rap. The five-track melodic rap EP includes contributions from Plug Kulture, Ayo Rash and Kushbeatz and explores family, friendship, love and betrayal. The standout example is “Ubuzima,” which samples Munsabire by Philemon Niyomugabo. Og2tone reworks the original guitar into a new setting, using it to frame lyrics about the difficulty of trusting people even after sharing years of experiences. The project shows how sampling can give older Rwandan sounds a new audience without removing them from their original context. The Greatest For his 15-track album “The Greatest,” Joel Ntwali, known as Skid of 99 Gang, assembled a large cast that includes Bruce the 1st, Juno Kizigenza, Phiona M, John BenAli, Feggy, Boyyounice, Gatikabisi, Vinxi, thedicekid, KidfromKigali, Confy, Gihanga, Paintedblvck and Sunshibe Mutesi, alongside members of his own crew. Released July 21, the album moves across gospel, jazz, trap and Afrobeats while keeping rap at its centre. Its message is built around confidence and self-belief, with Skid aiming to leave listeners feeling like stronger versions of themselves. “Turaje” is one of the project's key moments, combining patriotic themes with a sense of brotherhood and reflecting on Rwanda's liberation struggle. The album's sample work also gives it a strong connection to older sounds. Kinyacumi Dr. Nganji's “Kinyacumi” marks 10 years of his career in Rwanda's music industry. Released June 29, the compilation brings together multiple artistes while looking back on his development as a musician and creating room for collaboration with newer voices. Across trap, jazz and old-school rap, the album connects different generations and styles while creating room for newer artistes to contribute to Nganji’s decade-long story. T to the Racks Another release from 99 Gang, T-Rex Jr.'s “T to the Racks” is his first full-length project. The 12-track trap album runs for 37 minutes and 54 seconds and features Boyyounice, Skid, Kenny K-Shot, thedicekid and other members of the crew. Produced by TheIllusionist, Ehl3rs, Huybbie23 and others, the project follows T-Rex Jr.'s reasons for entering music and his ambitions for the future. Themes include believing in one's work, individuality and patriotism, giving the record a motivational streak. Shema Arnaud Shema, known as Arnaud Gray, released his self-titled debut album “Shema” on May 12. The independently released project features Ish Kevin, KidfromKigali, Bruce the 1st, Pro Zed, Olluwa, Dice the Prince, Trizzie Ninety Six, Young CK, Logan Joe, Juno Kizigenza, Paintedblvck, G1tore, Bushali and B-Threy. Gray's laid-back delivery runs across the project, but the writing often turns personal. Tracks such as “Sekoma,” “Uko Nageze i Kigali” and “Igihinde” explore different sides of his storytelling, with “Igihinde” drawing on Bollywood sounds. The album carries a level of polish that sets it apart from many independent releases, perhaps fitting given that it was recorded at Kigali Sound Lab, the studio Gray founded. The cover features a younger Gray wearing a Cuban chain. The image ties directly to the album’s themes, with Gray reflecting on how far he has come and how his transformation has surprised some of the people who knew him growing up. The child on the cover represents a version of himself who, in many ways, had already imagined the artiste he would become. Love's a Losing Game Kevin Nshuti Mugabo, known as Sobermind, released Love's a Losing Game July 21 under the Intare Sound Wave Initiative. The five-song EP leans heavily into R&B and melodic rap, exploring the different ways relationships break down. Darya Kish features on “Right Your Wrongs,” while Xeventeen, Kent Larkin and Micah appear on other tracks. Produced by OMGXeventeen, HeIsGenius, YRN STOTO, Ehl3rs and Micah, the project is built around soft melodies and vocals, offering a slower alternative to the harder-edged rap releases elsewhere on this list. 4 (four) Young 30X Records rapper 4Rex has been part of a productive year for the label, and his seven-track self-titled project, “4,” puts his identity at the centre. Across the tape, 4Rex returns to themes of friendship, family and finding a sense of belonging among both colleagues and people he meets along the way. “Umuraara Wanjye,” a tribute to brotherhood, carries that idea with a warmth that matches the song’s energy. Chaka Fella, Bodack and Lil Cuz contribute to the project, while production comes from Prodbygoast and Rynax. 4Rex’s rhyme patterns are among the strongest features of the project, particularly on the self-titled track “4,” where his delivery gives the record much of its character. On “Kubaho,” he takes a different route, sampling Philemon Niyomugabo’s song of the same name. The choice places his contemporary rap alongside an older Rwandan sound that has also appeared in recent work by Og2tone.
