Rwanda head coach Frédéric Guérin has reportedly handed Police VC outside hitter Matheus Bettim a late call-up to the national team squad preparing for the 2026 CAVB African Nations Championship. The championship is scheduled to take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo from September 7 to 21. A source within the national team camp at NPC Gymnasium told Times Sport that Bettim joined his teammates during Wednesday evening’s training session. The 24-year-old’s call-up comes amid reports that Rwanda had been considering granting him citizenship in recognition of his talent and contribution to the development of volleyball in the country. Bettim, who was born in Brazil, returned to Rwanda in July and signed a one-year contract with Police VC. Only 14 players will make the final squad for the continental championship. Bettim played a key role in Police VC’s historic run to the final of the African Men’s Club Championship, where the Rwandan side became the first club from the country to reach the tournament’s title decider. However, their impressive campaign ended with a silver medal after they lost to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the final.
