FIFA–UEFA rift: Has European football's global influence gone too far?

The ongoing tensions between FIFA and UEFA have largely been framed as a battle over governance, commercial interests and control of football's future. Depending on who you listen to, FIFA is either attempting to modernise and globalise the game, or over-commercialising it at the expense of football's traditions. UEFA, meanwhile, is portrayed either as the guardian of the sport's heritage or as the protector of Europe's long-established football dominance. Yet beneath this dispute lies a much bigger question—one that receives far less attention. Has European football's influence over the rest of the world become so dominant that it is now limiting the growth of football elsewhere? When many of the world's leading football broadcasters, newspapers and commentators speak about protecting football, they often define that through the lens of what benefits Europe's biggest leagues and clubs. More broadcasting revenue for elite competitions, greater commercial stability for Europe's top clubs and resistance to tournaments that challenge the existing order are frequently presented as if they represent the interests of the global game. But do they? What benefits Europe's football economy does not automatically benefit Africa, Asia, Oceania or the Caribbean. Perhaps it is time to distinguish between what is good for European football and what is good for world football. Nowhere is this conversation more relevant than in Africa. For decades, Africa has been one of the world's greatest producers of football talent. European football has been enriched by generations of African players whose brilliance has helped transform the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 into the most watched and commercially successful competitions on earth. Across Europe, national teams have also benefited enormously from players of African heritage. This is not about questioning anyone's nationality or identity. Players should always represent the countries for which they are eligible and with which they identify. Rather, it is about recognising an undeniable reality: Africa has made an extraordinary contribution to Europe's football success, yet it has struggled to translate that contribution into stronger domestic leagues, healthier football economies and sustained success on the global stage. Perhaps Africa's greatest export is no longer its players. It is its passion. Every weekend, millions of Africans fill homes, restaurants and sports bars to watch European football. The Premier League has become almost a religion in many African countries. European transfer news dominates conversations, social media and television schedules, while many domestic leagues continue to struggle for spectators, sponsorship, television audiences and commercial investment. I recognise this reality because I am part of it. Having lived in London for more than twenty-five years, I have developed a deep emotional attachment to Arsenal Football Club. Like millions of supporters across the world, I celebrate Arsenal's victories, analyse transfer rumours and eagerly anticipate every new season. Supporting Arsenal is not the problem. The question is whether millions of us have become far more emotionally invested in building European football than in building our own. Perhaps nothing illustrates this imbalance more clearly than the remarkable growth of European supporters' clubs across Africa. These organisations bring people together, create friendships and demonstrate football's unique ability to unite communities. There is absolutely nothing wrong with supporting Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. The concern lies elsewhere. Across Africa, thousands of supporters organise viewing events, purchase merchandise, attract sponsors and generate significant commercial activity around clubs located thousands of kilometres away. Imagine if even a fraction of that energy, organisation and financial commitment were invested in local football. Imagine full stadiums every weekend. Imagine businesses competing to sponsor domestic clubs with the same enthusiasm they show for European football. Imagine young supporters wearing the shirts of their hometown clubs with the same pride they wear those of Europe's giants. That is how sustainable football ecosystems are built. No major football nation has built a thriving domestic game primarily by consuming someone else's league. England built English football by supporting English clubs. Spain built Spanish football by supporting Spanish clubs. Germany built German football by supporting German clubs. If African football is to flourish, Africans must ultimately become its biggest investors—not only financially, but emotionally. This conversation is also about identity. Many young Africans can name the starting eleven of Europe's elite clubs but struggle to identify the champions of their own domestic league. That is not a criticism of young people. They simply consume the football that is most visible, accessible and heavily marketed. But over time, visibility shapes identity. Strong national teams are rarely built in isolation. They are usually supported by vibrant domestic competitions, passionate local supporters and football cultures that celebrate their own clubs alongside international success. Africa should aspire to exactly that. None of this is an argument against Europe. European football deserves enormous credit for building the world's most successful competitions through decades of investment, professionalism, innovation and excellence. Nor is this an argument that African players should stop pursuing careers in Europe. They absolutely should. Every footballer deserves the opportunity to compete at the highest level, maximise their career and provide for their family. The issue is not Europe's success. The issue is balance. A truly global game cannot depend indefinitely on one continent producing most of the commercial winners while others remain primarily suppliers of talent and consumers of entertainment. The current FIFA–UEFA disagreement provides an opportunity to ask difficult but necessary questions. Should football continue to revolve primarily around Europe's commercial interests? Should discussions about protecting football be driven mainly by those who already benefit most from the current system? Or should football's governing bodies actively pursue policies that strengthen domestic football across every confederation, ensuring that investment, visibility and opportunity are distributed more equitably throughout the game? Perhaps this is where FIFA's global mandate differs fundamentally from UEFA's regional one. UEFA exists to protect and promote European football. That is entirely appropriate. FIFA's responsibility, however, is broader. It exists to develop football everywhere. Those responsibilities will not always produce identical priorities, and that should not automatically be viewed as conflict. It may simply reflect the different missions of the two organisations. Ultimately, this debate should never become Europe versus the rest of the world. It should be about creating a healthier and more balanced global football ecosystem. One where Africa's extraordinary contribution to world football is matched by stronger domestic leagues, healthier football economies, better infrastructure and more competitive clubs. One where young African footballers continue dreaming of Europe while also aspiring to become legends for Rayon Sports, Al Ahly, TP Mazembe, Hearts of Oak, Young Africans, Orlando Pirates, ASEC Mimosas, Simba SC and countless other great African clubs. One where African supporters proudly follow Arsenal, Barcelona or Bayern Munich while filling their own stadiums every weekend with equal passion and commitment. Football should not become smaller. European football should continue to thrive. But the future success of European football should not come at the expense of football elsewhere. If the FIFA–UEFA disagreement encourages the football world to ask these bigger questions, then perhaps it will have achieved something far more important than resolving an institutional dispute. It may finally have started the conversation football has avoided for far too long: How do we ensure that the world's game truly works for the whole world?
