During a recent interview, young Zimbabwean footballer Noel Zimbeva, who has signed for NCAA Division One side Radford University in the United States, was asked what advice he would give the next generation. ALSO READ: Diaspora investors urged to tap into Rwanda’s housing boom His answer was remarkably simple. “We left home to change home.” Those seven words stayed with me because they challenge one of Africa’s most persistent assumptions. Conversations about migration are often dominated by what countries lose when talented people leave. We speak about brain drain, shrinking opportunities and the departure of some of our brightest minds. These concerns are real, but they tell only part of the story. Across Africa, millions of people live, study and work beyond the countries of their birth. They are doctors, engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, athletes, artists and academics. Many left because opportunities elsewhere allowed them to develop skills they could not easily acquire at home. Yet for many, the destination was never the final objective. Their ambition has always been larger than personal success. It has been to create opportunities that eventually benefit the communities and countries that shaped them. The contribution of Africa’s diaspora is often measured in remittances, and rightly so. Every year, billions of dollars flow back into African economies, supporting families, paying school fees, financing businesses and strengthening communities. Yet money is only one part of the dividend. Knowledge, professional networks, technology and experience often create even greater long-term value than money alone. I define the diaspora dividend as the long-term value created when Africans living abroad continue investing their knowledge, networks, capital and experience back into the continent. The countries that benefit most from migration will not necessarily be those that lose the fewest people. They will be those that build the strongest relationships with the people who leave. That requires more than patriotic appeals. It demands policies, institutions and opportunities that make it easy for talent, ideas and investment to continue flowing home. Rwanda offers an important example of this thinking. The country has consistently encouraged its diaspora to remain connected through investment, knowledge sharing and national development initiatives. Rather than viewing citizens abroad as people who have left, Rwanda has increasingly recognised them as partners in national development. It is an approach that other African nations may find worth adapting as they strengthen the relationship between migration and economic growth. The private sector also has a role to play. Organisations should see the diaspora not only as a source of investment, but also of mentorship, market intelligence, partnerships and global networks. This changes the conversation. Instead of asking how Africa can stop people from leaving, perhaps we should ask how Africa can strengthen the bridges that connect them back home. How do we make it easier to invest, collaborate, mentor and contribute across borders? These questions recognise an important truth. Mobility and patriotism are not opposites. Throughout Africa’s history, people have crossed borders in search of trade, knowledge and opportunity. Those journeys have often returned with new ideas, stronger networks and valuable experience. Today’s global economy has simply expanded those possibilities. The greatest contribution of the diaspora is therefore not defined by distance. It is defined by connection. A doctor in London, an entrepreneur in Dubai, a software engineer in Toronto or a footballer beginning his journey in the United States can continue shaping Africa’s future if meaningful links with home remain intact. Perhaps that is the deeper meaning behind Noel Zimbeva’s words. “We left home to change home.” Africa’s greatest export has never been its minerals alone. It has always been its people. The true diaspora dividend is realised when their knowledge, experience, networks and success continue creating value for the continent that first shaped them.
