Rayon Sports ended a 28-year wait for regional glory after winning the CECAFA Kagame Cup on Friday, August 7. The Blues beat Kenya's Gor Mahia 2-1 in a thrilling final, with teenage player Daniel Muhoza, 19, emerging as the hero with a spectacular late winner at Amahoro Stadium. Rayon Sports continued to dictate proceedings throughout much of the first half, combining defensive discipline with attacking intent. Gor Mahia struggled to get past the well-organised Rwandan defence and created few meaningful chances before the break. The Kenyan champions returned from halftime with renewed determination and immediately increased the intensity of their play. Pressing higher up the pitch and moving the ball with greater urgency, Gor Mahia began to wrestle control of the contest. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Sharif Musa Sirengo produced a moment of brilliance. Spotting space outside the penalty area, the midfielder unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew past the goalkeeper and into the net to level the scores at 1-1. The goal shifted momentum firmly towards Gor Mahia, who enjoyed their strongest spell of the match and forced Rayon Sports onto the defensive. However, the Rwandan side gradually regained their composure and began threatening again as the match entered its latter stages. Kameni nearly restored Rayon Sports' advantage in the 80th minute, rising highest to connect with a cross only for the Gor Mahia goalkeeper to produce an outstanding save. Rayon Sports thought they had found the winner moments later when Akbar Muderi put the ball into the net, but celebrations were cut short after the referee ruled the goal out for handball. With neither side able to find a decisive breakthrough in regulation time, the final headed into an additional 30 minutes of extra time. As fatigue began to set in, substitute Daniel Muhoza injected fresh energy into the Rayon Sports attack. The youngster had already troubled Gor Mahia's defence with his movement and confidence on the ball. Then came the defining moment. Deep into extra time, in the 99th minute, Rayon Sports won a free kick in a dangerous area. The delivery into the box caused confusion among the Gor Mahia defenders before the ball fell invitingly for Muhoza. The 19-year-old produced a moment of extraordinary technique, launching himself into the air and executing a stunning overhead kick that sailed beyond the helpless goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The strike proved decisive as Rayon Sports held firm during the remaining minutes to secure a memorable 2-1 victory and lift the CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy.
