By the time the singer took to the stage at exactly 8:45 p.m., nearly every section of the arena was filled. The audience spanned generations, with longtime fans who discovered his music in the late 2000s standing alongside younger listeners who sang his classics with remarkable familiarity. It was perhaps the clearest evidence of King James' lasting appeal. Although much of his catalogue is closely associated with an older generation of Rwandan music lovers, the packed arena showed that his music continues to resonate with new audiences. Among the notable attendees were fellow musicians and entertainment figures including Bruce Melodie, Coach Gael, Bruce The 1st, Logan Joe, Miss Rwanda 2026 Naomie Ishimwe, producer Madebeats, former manager Clement Ishimwe, Knowles Butera, US-based Rwandan creative executive Tuna Basa and Tom Close, among others. The nostalgic atmosphere began long before King James stepped onto the stage. As fans continued to stream into the more than 10,000-seat venue, DJs took the audience on a journey through different eras of Rwandan music. Their selection featured classics by Knowless Butera, Dream Boyz and members of Tuff Gang, whose songs helped shape Rwanda's pop and hip-hop scenes in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The warm-up session felt less like a conventional DJ set and more like a celebration of Rwanda's contemporary musical history. Before the main performance, King James and his team fulfilled a promise to use the concert as a platform for emerging talent. As part of that vision, rising artiste King V was introduced to one of the biggest audiences of his career. King V seized the opportunity to showcase his music and set the tone for the night's headline performance. A history-making entrance The arena briefly went dark as King James prepared to make his entrance. Phone flashlights illuminated the venue, screams echoed across the arena, and all eyes turned toward the stage. Moments later, the singer descended from the ceiling of BK Arena, dressed in a glittering white jacket as dancers in matching outfits awaited him below. It marked the first time an artiste had made an entrance from the arena's ceiling, immediately delivering the level of spectacle expected for such a milestone celebration. King James opened with Naratomboye,one of the songs that established him as a household name. He followed it with Nzakubona Ryari before performing fan favourites including Narihannye, Meze Neza, Umugisha, and Nta Mahitamo Mfite. During the latter, he invited his former manager, Clement Ishimwe, to accompany him on the piano. Three sets tracing a 20-year journey King James divided his performance into three distinct sets, each reflecting a different chapter of his musical career. The opening set was dominated by slow, emotional ballads that first earned him a loyal following among lovers of R&B and romantic music. After a brief rest, King James returns to BK Arena on Sunday, August 2, for the second and final show of his landmark 20-year anniversary concerts, with fans already eager for another unforgettable night.
