A 25-year-old mother of two was found strangled to death inside a rented house in Kayonza town, Eastern Province, on July 30, prompting the arrest of a male suspect. The victim, identified by residents as Tuyishimire, was discovered dead in Gasogororo Village, Mukarange Sector, after police responded to reports of a violent dispute at about 3 a.m. Rwanda National Police spokesperson for Eastern Province, SP Hamdun Twizeyimana, said officers found the house locked from outside upon arrival and immediately arrested a suspect. When police arrived, they found the house locked from outside. The suspect was arrested, and the victim's body was taken to Gahini Hospital for a post-mortem examination, Twizeyimana said. Police have not revealed the suspect's identity or confirmed the motive behind the killing, saying investigations are ongoing. Residents, however, said the suspect was not known in the neighbourhood and had only been seen in the area earlier that evening. According to several witnesses, the man and the victim spent hours drinking together before deciding to spend the night together. Witnesses alleged that the pair had an argument before they left to Tuyishimire's house. It is suspected the argument turned violent later resulting into the killing. The victim leaves behind two young children. Residents say her husband is currently being held at the Karubamba Transit Centre, leaving the children without either parent at home. Mukarange Sector Executive Secretary Claude Murekezi, suspects that the case is linked to sex work, which he says remains a challenge in the town. We are a growing urban centre and prostitution is among the challenges we face, Murekezi said, adding that the town's administration is putting in place various programmes to eliminate such practices. We are linking vulnerable women to employment opportunities in ongoing housing construction projects, the Village Umurenge Programme and vocational training in skills such as tailoring and hairdressing through our development partners, he said.
