C'Wealth Games: At last, Rwanda has its moment as Niyonkuru's bronze ends long wait

Debut: Delhi 2010. For 16 years, Rwanda has turned up at the Commonwealth Games with hope, ambition and increasingly competitive athletes. Each edition brought near misses, but also encouraging performances. Even so, there was always the belief that history would, one day, finally be made. In Glasgow 2026, that long wait came to an end. Rwanda has finally won a medal at the Commonwealth Games. Florence Niyonkuru's bronze medal in the women's 10,000 metres was, from Rwanda's perspective, worth far more than a place on the podium. It broke a long-standing jinx. It was historic. It proves that Rwandan athletes can finally compete with the traditional distance-running powerhouses. Niyonkuru crossed the finish line in 31:55.47, just 0.23 seconds ahead of Uganda's Esther Chebet to secure bronze behind Australia's Rose Davies (gold) and Kenya's Diana Wanza (silver). The significance of that narrow margin between bronze and fourth place extends well beyond the stopwatch. It represents the difference between another chapter of what might have been and one of the greatest moments in Rwandan athletics. Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in Delhi in 2010, Rwanda had become all too familiar with frustration, as has been the case at other major championships. Nonetheless, there were performances that hinted at promise without delivering medals. That year, for instance, world Para-athletics champion Hermas Muvunyi finished sixth in the men's T46 100 metres. Yves Nimubona's fifth-place finish in the 5,000 metres showed progress, though not yet the breakthrough. However, it was a sign of things to come. Time and again, Rwanda found itself knocking on the door without ever walking through it. That is why Niyonkuru's achievement matters so deeply, for it breaks a psychological barrier as much as a statistical one. Hopefully, this will be the first of many. Every successful sporting nation has a defining moment that changes expectations. Before that first medal, athletes often compete hoping to make finals or finish respectably. Afterwards, they begin competing to win. Rwanda has now crossed that invisible line. To put this bronze into historical perspective, one only has to consider that Niyonkuru's accomplishment has come where some of Rwanda's finest athletes could not. For years, Dieudonné Disi carried the nation's distance-running hopes almost single-handedly. His career remains one of the most remarkable in Rwandan athletics, and to a certain degree, East African athletics. It included numerous international races, multiple podium finishes, and appearances at the Olympic Games and World Championships. Disi's personal best of 59:32 in the half marathon cemented his legacy as Rwanda's greatest male distance runner. Yet even he, despite his remarkable consistency in a career spanning more than a decade, never won a medal at a major global championship. That fact alone underlines the scale of Niyonkuru's achievement. She has not diminished Disi's legacy. Instead, she has built upon the foundation that he and others before him, such as Mathias Ntawulikura, laid. Ntawulikura participated in a joint African record five Olympic Games—1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. A record he shares with three other track and field athletes: Nigerian Mary Onyali, Mozambican Maria Mutola and Angolan João N'Tyamba. We must also recognise that every generation needs pioneers, and every pioneer hopes someone will eventually go one step further. Niyonkuru has done precisely that. For the uninitiated, Niyonkuru's bronze should not be seen as a fortunate one-off. It is the latest chapter in a season that has established her among Africa's elite distance runners. A national half-marathon record in Berlin, victory at the prestigious TCS World 10K Bengaluru and silver at the African Championships all pointed to an athlete quietly reaching maturity. Glasgow simply confirmed what the athletics world had already begun to recognise. Equally encouraging is what her success says about the future of Rwandan athletics. The country has never lacked talent. John Hakizimana, Epiphanie Nyirabarame, Gervais Hakizimana, Robert Kajuga, Felicien Muhitira and many others have represented Rwanda with distinction over the years. What was missing was that defining championship breakthrough that could inspire the next generation to believe medals were attainable rather than merely aspirational. Niyonkuru's success should give hope and belief to young Rwandan runners, who now have tangible proof that they can stand on a major championship podium. The 24-year-old is coached by Jean Pierre Ndacyayisenga. From this moment, Rwandan coaches have validation that their training methods can produce world-class athletes, while the Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) has fresh evidence that investment in athletics can yield international success. Momentum matters in sport. One medal often becomes two, then five, then a culture of expectation. Those in charge need to build on this Commonwealth Games bronze and approach future global championships with genuine purpose. As a student of history, I know that nations rarely stop at their first breakthrough, and one hopes Rwanda follows a similar path. Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda all began with pioneers before developing sustained traditions of excellence. Rwanda is still some distance from joining that company, but every journey begins with a single step. In this case, it is a landmark one. Fortunately for Rwanda, Niyonkuru has delivered that landmark. Her bronze medal will forever occupy a unique place in Rwanda's sporting history—not because it is bronze, but because it is the first. Niyonkuru is the talk of the town, and deservedly so. While some might say it is only a bronze, from Rwanda's perspective the colour of the medal is simply irrelevant. Its true value lies in what it represents. It ends years of frustration and disappointment—the breaking of an enduring jinx. Has Rwanda arrived at the top table? It is still too early to judge. Yet, for the optimists, it marks the beginning of a future in which Rwanda's athletes no longer travel to major championships merely hoping to compete but believing they can win. That change in belief may ultimately prove to be Niyonkuru's greatest legacy. At 24, the African Championships silver medalist still has almost her entire career ahead of her. All she needs now is to add consistency to her rapidly growing CV.
