MTN Rwandacell PLC (MTN Rwanda) on Thursday, July 30, announced a major milestone in its network modernisation programme with Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a move the telecom operator says will enhance connectivity, improve customer experience, increase network capacity and support Rwanda's digital transformation agenda.
As Rwanda accelerates its digital journey, reliable, high-quality connectivity is becoming increasingly important for how individuals, businesses and communities communicate, transact, access services and participate in the digital economy, stated the major telecommunication company in the country.
Through continued investments in its network infrastructure, MTN Rwanda says it is building a more resilient, efficient and future-ready network to meet customers&039; evolving needs. One of the latest enhancements enabled by the investments is Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), a technology that allows customers to make and receive voice calls over 4G network instead of older 2G or 3G systems.
With higher speed internet, VoLTE delivers clearer audio, faster call connection times, and simultaneous voice and data use.

According to the company, customers with compatible devices will benefit from HD voice quality, faster call connection times and the ability to continue using 4G data services while on a call, creating a more seamless communication experience.
Investment in next-generation connectivity
Speaking at a press conference, Elijah Iragaba, MTN Rwanda&039;s Chief Technology Officer, said the company was continuously investing in its network to ensure customers enjoy a world-class connectivity experience.
"As Rwanda advances towards a more digitally connected future, modern, resilient and high-capacity networks are essential to supporting the growing demand for digital services. Our network modernisation programme is designed to enhance customer experiences today while building a strong foundation for the technologies and services of tomorrow," he said.
"The enhancements we are introducing are about more than technology. They are about enabling people to communicate more effectively, helping businesses operate more efficiently, and ensuring that customers can fully participate in Rwanda's growing digital economy.”
Iragaba noted that the company remains committed to investing in infrastructure that delivers meaningful benefits to customers and the country as the economy continues to evolve.
He said the investments are also expanding access to next-generation connectivity across Rwanda. MTN Rwanda has continued to extend its 5G footprint across several areas of the City of Kigali and recently expanded coverage to Musanze District, one of Rwanda's leading tourism and business hubs.
Together with ongoing 4G network upgrades, these investments are helping provide faster and more reliable connectivity that supports innovation, enterprise growth, tourism and digital inclusion, according to the company.

More devices set to support VoLTE
Somdev Sen, MTN Rwanda&039;s Chief Consumer and Digital Officer, said the improvements come at a time when digital services are becoming increasingly integrated into everyday life.
From mobile financial services and e-commerce to online learning, remote working and access to government services, he observed, reliable connectivity plays a critical role in promoting digital inclusion and economic participation.
Sen said the enhanced calling experience is currently available to customers using compatible iPhone devices and the latest Samsung Galaxy S series models.
Certification processes are also underway for additional Samsung models and Transsion brands, including Tecno, Itel and Infinix, which will enable more customers to benefit from VoLTE services in the coming months.
