Rwanda and Belarus are looking to expand bilateral cooperation, with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko highlighting poortunities in key sectors. Priority areas include industries, agriculture, education, information technology, defence and security. The development follows the presentation of Letters of Credence by Ambassador Maj Gen Joseph Nzabamwita to Lukashenko on Tuesday, July 28, accrediting him as Rwanda’s Non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Belarus. Will work toward promoting Rwanda's interests and cooperation between our countries,” Amb. Nzabamwita wrote on X. During the ceremony, Lukashenko said Belarus attaches importance to strengthening economic cooperation with Rwanda as a foundation for deeper political relations. “Belarus seeks to expand relations with Rwanda. We attach particular importance to the economic component of interaction as the foundation for developing political dialogue,” Lukashenko said. He called for increased trade between the two countries and the establishment of a joint cooperation commission to support collaboration in key sectors. The engagement builds on earlier discussions between Rwanda and Belarus on expanding economic ties. In August 2025, Nzabamwita, who is also Ambassador of Rwanda to Russia, met the Belarusian envoy to Russia Aleksandr Rogozhnik to discuss areas of potential cooperation, including agriculture, manufacturing, ICT, education, defence and security. Belarus has previously expressed interest in supplying Rwanda with agricultural machinery and providing after-sales support, while both countries have explored ways to boost trade and strengthen the legal framework governing their cooperation.
