The championship represents more than a sporting victory. By completing the league season without a single defeat, MKUR not only secured Rwanda's top university football title but also earned the honour of representing the country at the forthcoming East African University Games.
Addressing the champions, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia described modern sport as a global industry that presents limitless opportunities beyond the playing field, including careers in sports management, journalism, analytics and administration.
He commended the players for demonstrating discipline, resilience, teamwork and respect throughout the season, noting that these values had been the foundation of their historic success.
"Gone are the days when sport was viewed merely as recreation. Today, it is a global industry that creates careers and transforms lives," Dr. Kimemia said.
He challenged the players to remain ambassadors of the University both on and off the pitch, reminding them that winning the championship had set a new benchmark for future generations of MKUR students.
"The greatest victory is not lifting the trophy but becoming the person who keeps winning," he added, reaffirming the University's commitment to investing in sports as an integral part of student development.
Delivering the keynote address, Founder and Chairman of Mount Kigali University, Prof. Simon Gicharu, congratulated the team for making history and bringing pride to the University and the country.
He emphasised that outstanding institutions are defined not by their buildings but by the achievements and character of the people they produce, reiterating that the University's mission extends beyond academic excellence to nurturing well-rounded graduates capable of succeeding in every sphere of life.
Using the symbolism behind the University's name, "Mountain," Prof. Gicharu explained that success resembles climbing a mountain, it demands preparation, resilience, strategy and determination.
"Our vision is not merely to produce graduates but to develop talented, innovative and resilient young people who can compete globally," he said.
Prof. Gicharu encouraged students to identify and nurture their talents, observing that sport has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar global industry capable of creating meaningful careers and changing lives.
He pledged continued investment in sports infrastructure, expanded training facilities and stronger support systems to enable student-athletes to realise their full potential.
The Chairman further noted that the University's continued investment in sports reflects its broader vision of producing graduates who are competitive not only academically but also in leadership, innovation and co-curricular excellence.
The evening concluded with the presentation of awards to the team's leadership and coaching staff in recognition of their contribution to the University's historic achievement, followed by a championship dinner celebrating one of the most successful seasons in MKUR's history.
As the champions prepare to represent Rwanda at the East African University Games, their unbeaten campaign stands as a powerful reflection of Mount Kigali University's growing reputation as a premier institution where excellence in education, leadership, innovation and sport go hand in hand.
