Mount Kigali University (MKUR) has commissioned the MKUR Ecosystem Access Road, an infrastructure project valued at more than Rwf300 million, demonstrating the university's commitment to safety, accessibility, sustainability and community development, according to the university management. Jointly funded by the university and the local community, the road was officially commissioned on July 23 by Prof. Simon Gicharu, Chairman and Founder of MKUR, alongside Vice Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia, university leadership, local authorities, students, staff and members of the Nyanza community. The new road serves as a vital link connecting the MKUR Ecosystem, which includes Mount Kigali University, the University Medical Centre, Kigali Paramount Hotel, the Ladies' Hostels and Royal FM. Beyond improving access to these institutions, it also benefits neighbouring schools, businesses and surrounding residential communities. By easing traffic congestion, enhancing transport efficiency and strengthening emergency access, the road provides safer and more reliable movement for students, staff, patients, hotel guests, visitors and residents. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Gicharu emphasised that a university's role extends beyond academic excellence to creating meaningful value for surrounding communities. He noted that investments in infrastructure should improve lives, enhance safety and support responsible development while contributing to Rwanda's national development agenda. The project reflects MKUR's long-term vision of creating an integrated environment where education, healthcare, enterprise and community life thrive together. Vice Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia described the road as more than physical infrastructure, stating that it connects education, healthcare, business and community, creating opportunities for current and future generations. He highlighted the project as a successful example of collaboration between the university and the local community, demonstrating how shared investment can produce lasting public value and promote inclusive growth. The initiative was warmly welcomed by local leaders, with Nyanza Cell Chairman Businge Anthony noting that the new road has significantly improved mobility and safety by replacing a narrow, congested route that previously posed risks to motorists and pedestrians. The commissioning ceremony included prayers for road users, an official ribbon-cutting and a ceremonial flag-off marking the road's opening. Overall, the MKUR Ecosystem Access Road symbolises Mount Kigali University's broader philosophy that higher education institutions should contribute directly to societal transformation.
