Kwibohora 32 celebration strengthens Rwanda-Indonesia ties through culture

Hundreds of participants gathered in Jakarta to mark the 32nd anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day (Kwibohora 32), with the celebration highlighting the country’s transformation while strengthening bilateral ties through culture and people-to-people diplomacy. The event held on July 17–18 brought together diplomats, Indonesian government officials, members of the Rwandan community and friends of Rwanda. Organised by the Embassy of Rwanda to Indonesia under the theme Rwanda's Journey Continues, the event showcased the country's progress over the past three decades and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive, sustainable and future-oriented socio-economic development. Reflecting on Rwanda’s transformation and resilience Kwibohora is a significant national celebration that reflects Rwanda's journey of rebuilding the nation following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. More than a remembrance of history, Kwibohora symbolises the resilience of the Rwandan people, the spirit of national unity and reconciliation, and the country's determination to build a peaceful and prosperous future. In his remarks, Sheikh Abdul Karim Harelimana, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Rwanda to Indonesia, emphasised that Rwanda's achievements today are the result of visionary leadership, the resilience of its people, and a shared commitment to nation-building. Today, Rwanda is recognised for its achievements in good governance, security, gender equality, innovation, environmental sustainability, healthcare, education, and sustained economic growth. Kwibohora reminds us that liberation is not merely a historical event but an ongoing responsibility. Rwanda's journey continues through unity, resilience, and hope as we strive to build a better future for generations to come, said Ambassador Harelimana. Strengthening Rwanda-Indonesia friendship through diplomacy Representing the Government of Indonesia, Santo Darmosumarto, Director General for Asia-Pacific and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, noted that Rwanda's journey has inspired many countries, including Indonesia, by demonstrating the transformative power of unity and national renewal. Peace, reconciliation, and development must always go hand in hand” Culture takes centre stage in strengthening people-to-people ties As part of the Kwibohora 32 celebration, the Embassy of Rwanda presented a cultural performance by Ruti Joel, a renowned Rwandan musician recognised for preserving Gakondo – Rwanda's traditional musical heritage – while introducing it to younger generations through contemporary interpretations. The performance formed part of Rwanda's cultural diplomacy efforts to introduce the country's values, identity, and rich cultural heritage to Indonesian audiences. Ruti Joel's performance created a warm and lively atmosphere, as guests joined Rwanda's Ambassador to Indonesia in singing and dancing, celebrating the spirit of Kwibohora together. Gilang Syahbani, Communication & IT Officer of the Embassy of Rwanda to Indonesia, said the moment demonstrated how culture can serve as a bridge that strengthens friendship between nations. Ruti Joel's participation in the Kwibohora 32 celebration in Jakarta marked an important milestone in Rwanda's cultural diplomacy in Indonesia. Seeing guests dance together with Ruti Joel and the Ambassador of Rwanda demonstrated that culture is a universal language capable of bringing people together, especially two nations that deeply value art and tradition, said Gilang. Meanwhile, Ruti Joel expressed his pride in participating in the Kwibohora 32 celebration in Jakarta while encouraging people to embrace and preserve their cultural identity. I am truly honoured to be part of this special celebration. My message to Rwandans and young people everywhere is to love and take pride in their own culture, because culture is an essential part of our identity. Through music, technology, and cultural festivals, we can share our culture with the world, he said. Through the celebration of Kwibohora 32, the Embassy of Rwanda hopes to further strengthen the relationship between Rwanda and Indonesia—not only through diplomacy and development cooperation, but also through stronger people-to-people connections fostered by culture.
