As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games draw closer, Team Rwanda has entered the final phase of its preparations, with athletes, coaches, and support staff undertaking intensive training camps in Kigali ahead of the event.
The Commonwealth games are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 2 August in Glasgow, Scotland.
Team Rwanda is currently undergoing technical sessions, physical conditioning, and comprehensive athlete support. The team will feature in disciplines including athletics, para-athletics, and swimming.
Athletics and para-athletics players are currently training at Amahoro Stadium, while the national swimming team has established camp at La Palisse Hotel Nyamata, where daily programmes combine technical training with physical conditioning.
Several members of Team Rwanda head to Glasgow in encouraging following impressive performances on the international stage. These include para-athlete Clementine Uwiduhaye who recently claimed a bronze medal in the Women's 100m T46 at the Rabat 2026 World Para Athletics Grand Prix, while distance runner Florence Niyonkuru Florence secured gold in the Elite Women's 10,000 metres at the TCS World 10K Bengaluru in India.
Fellow athletics representative Emeline Imanizabayo also arrives with confidence after winning gold at the 2026 African Athletics Championships, while Claire Uwitonze brings valuable Commonwealth Games experience, having represented Rwanda at Birmingham 2022.
In swimming, Kean Murenzi Sheja earned bronze in the 800m Freestyle at the Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships, while Axela Marita Echessah secured silver medals in both the 50m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley.
