The death of middle blocker Patrick Byiringiro has left Rwanda's volleyball fraternity devastated, with clubs, coaches, teammates and sports figures paying tribute to the 24-year-old. Byiringiro died on Wednesday after a battle with stomach cancer, his family confirmed. He was the younger brother of Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club captain Prince Muhizi. His untimely death came just weeks before he was due to begin a new chapter with APR VC ahead of the 2026/27 season following his transfer from Kepler VC. Kepler VC president Nathalie Munyampenda was among the first to express her grief over the loss of the player, who was also a student at Kepler College. This young man, I sincerely believe, would have become Rwanda's greatest middle blocker, Munyampenda wrote on her X account. I'm deeply heartbroken to see him leave us so young. He was so kind. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Byiringiro was a talented athlete whose commitment and contribution to volleyball left a lasting impact on his teammates, coaches and the entire volleyball fraternity. His untimely passing is a great loss to the Rwandan volleyball community.
