Rwanda’s men’s and women’s sitting volleyball teams endured a difficult start to their campaigns at the 2026 Sitting Volleyball World Championships currently underway in Hangzhou, China, suffering opening-day defeats against two of the sport’s traditional powerhouses. In the women’s tournament, Rwanda fell to Iran in straight sets on July 10, with the Asian giants claiming a convincing 25-11, 25-11, 25-11 victory. Iran, a multiple-time Paralympic and world championship participant, dominated proceedings with superior blocking, tactical serving, and experience at the highest level. Earlier on the same day, the men’s team also tasted defeat after losing 3-0 to Egypt in their Pool B preliminary round match. Egypt sealed the encounter with set scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-14, underlining their status as one of Africa’s strongest sitting volleyball nations. The Sitting Volleyball World Championships bring together the world’s elite teams and serve as a key benchmark ahead of future Paralympic qualification cycles.
