BPR Bank powers Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally with Rwf150m boost

BPR Bank Rwanda Plc, part of the KCB Group, has committed Rwf150 million towards the 2026 Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally scheduled for July 10–12, reaffirming its position in supporting motorsport growth. The sponsorship, unveiled during the official presentation of the rally on Wednesday, July 8, will support the organisation of the third round of the FIA African Rally Championship (ARC), while also backing five leading rally crews. This year’s edition is expected to attract more than 35 crews from seven countries, competing across 18 thrilling stages covering 397.52 kilometres, including 252 kilometres of competitive racing. Speaking at the launch, BPR Bank Rwanda Chief Operators Officer Godfrey Kariuki Kamau said the investment reflects the bank’s belief that sport can drive social and economic transformation. Sport remains one of the most powerful platforms to inspire young people, nurture talent, build a lasting legacy and contribute to economic growth, Kamau said. He noted that KCB Group has so far invested more than $3.5 million in sports development across East Africa, supporting athletics, football, rugby, volleyball, chess, golf and motorsport. In Rwanda, the group has also invested in motorsport over the years, helping drivers and navigators compete in national and continental championships. Backing rally crews and event organisation Unlike previous editions, when the bank’s support focused primarily on sponsoring rally crews, this year's investment has also been extended to the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) to strengthen the organisation behind the country's flagship motorsport event. For this year rally, BPR Bank will sponsor five crews, Karan Patel, Queen Kalimpinya, Oscar Ntambi, Tinashe Gatimu and Nikhil Sachania, together with their co-drivers. Kamau said the partnership goes beyond motorsport. We believe this event will not only showcase the very best of African motorsport but also reinforce Rwanda’s growing reputation as a leading destination for international sporting events. Drivers welcome continued corporate support The continued investment has been welcomed by competitors, who say corporate backing remains essential for the growth of the sport. Rwandan driver Queen Kalimpinya and Kenyan driver Karan Patel, both supported by BPR Bank, acknowledged the bank’s long-term commitment to motorsport and its growing role in supporting competitors beyond individual rally events. In the past, they only supported us during the Mountain Gorilla Rally, but now they stand with us throughout the season,” Kalimpinya said. “They provide both financial and mechanical support wherever we compete. While it doesn't cover every expense, it makes a huge difference, and we're very thankful for their continued commitment to motorsport.
