Forty-three Rwandan students are set to pursue Master's and PhD studies in Brazil under a scholarship programme that marks a first in academic cooperation between the two countries. The initiative is expected to strengthen the students' professional capacities while contributing to Rwanda's development agenda through the transfer of knowledge and expertise upon their return. On Thursday, July 2, the Higher Education Council (HEC), represented by Désiré Gacinya, Director of the Bursary, Loan and Fund Management Unit, joined partners during a pre-departure orientation for the scholarship recipients. The session provided students with practical guidance on academic life, cultural adaptation, financial support, and settling into a new environment, ensuring they are well prepared for the next chapter of their studies abroad. She described the group as pioneers who will play a key role in deepening ties between the two countries and fostering scientific and academic cooperation. “This is the first group of Rwandans going to Brazil, and they are a significant number. When they come back in two or three years, they will bring Brazil with them,” she said. “They will bring science and knowledge. They will establish connections with institutions and people in Brazil, create opportunities for companies and enterprises to work together, and contribute to joint research initiatives. I think this is a very good beginning,” she noted. I believe we have made significant progress within one year,” she said. The scholarship beneficiaries also expressed optimism about the opportunities ahead and their potential contribution to Rwanda’s development.
