Norway 2-1 Ivory Coast Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most, scoring a late winner to fire Norway into the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday. The Manchester City striker tapped home with just minutes remaining after Ivory Coast had fought back to level the contest, securing Norway's first-ever victory in the knockout rounds of the World Cup at the third attempt. Norway will now face five-time champions Brazil for a place in the quarter-finals, while Ivory Coast bow out after an impressive campaign in which they reached the knockout stage for the first time. The Norwegians began brightly and Haaland threatened inside the opening minutes, but his close-range header was comfortably blocked before Martin Ødegaard slightly overhit a pass that would have sent him clear on goal. Ivory Coast gradually settled into the contest and began to enjoy the better spell of possession. Ghislain Konan tested the Norwegian defence with a low effort into the side netting before Nicolas Pépé squandered the visitors' best first-half opportunity, failing to hit the target after being picked out by Yan Diomandé at the far post. Just as the opening period appeared destined to end goalless, Norway found a moment of brilliance. Antonio Nusa drifted inside from the left wing and curled a superb strike beyond Yahia Fofana to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead moments before half-time. Norway nearly doubled their advantage before the interval as Haaland twice came close, first seeing another effort blocked before narrowly failing to connect with Alexander Sørloth's flick-on from a corner. Ivory Coast emerged after the break with renewed purpose and pushed Norway onto the back foot. Pépé forced goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland into a sharp save at his near post before Norway almost doubled their lead through Sander Berge, whose awkward effort bounced safely into Fofana's hands. Moments later, Torbjørn Heggem thought he had scored with a towering header from a corner, only for substitute Amad Diallo to produce a remarkable goal-line clearance. The Manchester United winger then transformed from defender to goalscorer. Introduced in the second half, Diallo produced a moment of individual brilliance, weaving through the Norwegian defence before firing an unstoppable finish past Nyland to level the scores in spectacular fashion and hand Ivory Coast fresh belief. But just as momentum appeared to have swung in the Elephants' favour, Norway's star man had the final say. Patrick Berg delivered a low cross into the six-yard box and Haaland was perfectly positioned to steer home from close range, sealing the decisive goal and breaking Ivorian hearts. Ivory Coast threw everything forward in search of another equaliser, but Nyland preserved Norway's lead with an excellent save to tip Diallo's late free-kick over the crossbar. For Ivory Coast, the defeat marked a painful end to an otherwise memorable tournament. Despite earning 14 corners and creating several promising opportunities, Emerse Faé's side lacked the clinical finishing needed to prolong their World Cup journey. They leave North America with plenty to be proud of after reaching the knockout stage for the first time and proving they can compete with the world's best.
