Two killed, seven injured in attacks blamed on DR Congo, Burundi forces

Two civilians were killed and seven other injured in attacks on villages in eastern DR Congo over the weekend, the AFC/M23 rebel movement said on Monday. The Sunday attacks were carried out against village of Ilundu/Basita in South Kivu province by the Congolese army and their allied Burundian forces, according to AFC/M23 spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka. ALSO READ: Banyamulenge take Burundi govt to court over abuses in Minembwe The deceased include a 19-year-old man, while the injured include a seven-year-old and a 12-year-old. Many people remain missing. Search and rescue operations are regularly interrupted by the persistent presence of drones that continue to fly over the area, Kanyuka said. Silence in the face of these crimes becomes a form of complicity. The tragedy of Minembwe can no longer be ignored, minimized, or relegated to the background. Kanyuka added that two classrooms at the Ilundu primary school were also destroyed. The local community, especially the Banyamulenge, has been under a blockade. Members of this community accuse the government and its allied Burundian troops as well as FDLR and Wazalendo militias of ethnic violence. In October 2025, a non-profit organisation representing Banyamulenge filed a case with the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), seeking justice for over abuses committed by Burundian forces in Minembwe, South Kivu.
