Rwanda's teleport becomes first fully certified facility in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Rwanda Space Agency's teleport has received Tier 3 Certification from the World Teleport Association (WTA), making it the first fully certified facility of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. A teleport is a ground-based facility that enables communication between satellites in space and users on Earth. It serves as a critical piece of infrastructure that allows satellites to transmit and receive data, supporting services ranging from broadband connectivity and navigation to climate monitoring and disaster management. With the certification announced on Wednesday, June 3, the Rwamagana-based teleport becomes the world's first such facility operated by a national space agency anywhere to earn the recognition. According to Rwanda Space Agency (RSA), Tier 3 Certification demonstrates that the facility meets internationally recognised standards for reliability, operational procedures, infrastructure, and service delivery. Tier 4 is the highest certification level. ALSO READ: Rwanda partners with global players to drive space economy The certification follows an independent technical audit conducted under the WTA Teleport Certification Programme, which assesses teleport facilities worldwide. With the certificate remaining valid for three years. This achievement reflects Rwanda's long-term vision to develop a competitive and future oriented space sector, said Gaspard Twagirayezu, the RSA chief executive. The certification of our teleport reinforces confidence in Rwanda's technical capabilities and highlights the country's role in advancing regional space infrastructure and satellite communications services. The certification comes when demand for satellite-enabled services is growing across Africa, driven by the need for better internet connectivity, climate and environmental monitoring, precision agriculute, scientific research, aviation services, and emergency response systems, according to the agency. In Africa, Egypt's Nilesat Cairo Teleport is the only one with WTA's Tier 4 Certification. Cameroon holds provisional certification. Randall Barney, the Executive Director of the World Teleport Association, said Rwanda's achievement signals the growing maturity of Africa's space and satellite communications ecosystem. As the first fully certified teleport in East Africa and the first space agency-operated facility to achieve WTA certification, Rwanda's Teleport demonstrates the growing technical sophistication and operational excellence emerging across Africa's space and satellite communications sector, he said. According to RSA, the certified teleport can support a broad range of users, including satellite operators, telecommunications companies, government agencies, research institutions, emerging space companies, and international partners operating across the region. Officials said internationally certified ground infrastructure will be increasingly important as governments and businesses rely more on satellite-based technologies. Since the establishment of Rwanda Space Agency in 2020, the country has invested in satellite communications infrastructure, space education and skills development, international partnerships, and a national geospatial data hub that supports sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure planning, and disaster management.
