Each year, the city welcomes thousands of visitors attending international conferences, sporting events, cultural festivals, and business meetings, alongside leisure tourists. This steady rise in arrivals is increasing demand for hotels, restaurants, transport, entertainment, and tourism-related services, creating new opportunities for investors. Kigali is focused on building sustainable tourism that links economic growth, environmental protection, and cultural development. Eco-tourism and environmental investment One of Kigali’s most notable achievements is the transformation of wetlands into eco-tourism and conservation spaces. These projects are opening investment opportunities in recreation, hospitality, and environmental education. A key example is Nyandungu Eco Park, which was restored from a degraded wetland into a major eco-tourism destination. It now attracts city residents and international visitors and has gained global recognition, including ranking among top global destinations on TripAdvisor. Other wetlands such as Gikondo, Rwampara, Nyabugogo, Rugenge-Rwintare, and Kibumba are also under restoration, with future potential to become biodiversity and eco-tourism hubs. Conference and business tourism Kigali has positioned itself as a leading African destination for conferences and international events. It has hosted major global gatherings such as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Women Deliver Conference, ICASA, and the Global AI Summit on Africa. These events drive demand for accommodation, conference facilities, transport, and event management services. Kigali Convention Centre plays a central role in supporting this growth and reinforcing the city’s status as a meetings and events destination. Sports tourism Sports tourism is another rapidly growing sector in Kigali. The city has invested significantly in sports infrastructure to support international tournaments and entertainment events. Kigali has hosted major sporting events including the FIFA Series, the Basketball Africa League, and the historic UCI Road World Championships — the first edition ever held in Africa. These achievements are supported by modern facilities such as Amahoro Stadium, BK Arena, and Nyarutarama Golf Course. The continued expansion of sports and entertainment activities offers strong investment opportunities in hospitality, recreation, event hosting, and tourism services. Cultural and heritage tourism Culture remains one of Rwanda’s strongest tourism assets. Kigali continues to promote cultural tourism through exhibitions, performances, festivals, and creative arts initiatives. Sites such as Richard Kandt House Museum and Kigali Cultural Village showcase Rwanda’s history, traditions, and identity while creating opportunities for cultural tourism investment. Overall, with rising visitor numbers, expanding infrastructure, and a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation, Kigali continues to position itself as one of Africa’s most promising tourism investment destinations.
