Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Volleyball Club middle blocker Sam Engwua has vowed to make his presence felt against Police VC as his side aims to level the national volleyball league finals series in Saturday’s Game 4. Police currently hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series after winning the opening two matches, both played in the absence of Engwua, who suffered an ankle injury after landing awkwardly in Game 1. However, following a two-week break—during which four Rwandan clubs competed at the African Men’s Volleyball Club Championship, where REG claimed bronze—Engwua made his long-awaited comeback. His return immediately lifted REG’s performances, helping the team secure its first victory of the finals series on Saturday. As things stand, Police have an edge on the title but Engwua insists the battle isn’t done yet. He told Times Sport that REG are determined to fight until the end as they pursue a league title they last won in 2023. “After this first win, I know there is still a lot to improve, especially in our tactical approach. But I believe in my teammates, and I am confident we can push this series to Game 5,” he said. What Engwua’s return means for REG Engwua’s comeback gives head coach Benon Mugisha a major defensive boost while restoring balance to the squad. The middle blocker adds strength at the net alongside Emmy Twagirayezu, team captain Peace Twagirayezu, and right attacker Marker Ayang Madol, giving REG more options in both blocking and quick attacking play. REG could also benefit from Police’s weakened attack following the absence of Brazilian hitter Bettim Mathues, who played a key role in helping the law enforcers reach the final of the African Men’s Volleyball Club Championship. Despite REG’s growing momentum, concerns remain over the setter position. Crispin Ntantenri remains vital to the team’s rhythm, and any injury or absence could significantly affect REG’s performance, with backup setter Thierry Mugabo yet to provide the same level of influence.
