The Rwandan Community in Niger, in collaboration with the High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, on Saturday, May 9, commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event held in the Nigerien capital Niamey was attended by about 140 guests, including members of the Rwandan Community, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, members of UN Agencies and International organizations, members of civil society organizations and friends of Rwanda. The government of Niger was represented by the Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Souleymane Issakou. Issakou expressed solidarity with the Rwandan people during the commemoration period and talked about bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Niger. He praised the role played by Rwanda's Gacaca courts in the reconciliation process, and the extraordinary development achieved since 1994. He said the resilience of Rwandans should be emulated by other Africans. Al Hassan Cissé, head of FAO in Niger, who represented the UN Resident Coordinator, delivered a message of reflection on the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide of the Tutsi. Denise Uwera, a member of the Rwandan Community in Niamey, gave a live testimony on early warning signs leading to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
