Utility service centre opened in Kicukiro

Rwanda Electricity Corporation &Rwanda Water and Sanitation Corporation (RECO & RWASCO), yesterday opened a community service centre in Nyarugunga Sector, Kicukiro District. Speaking at the opening ceremony, (RECO & RWASCO) Managing Director, Yves Muyange, revealed the main objective of opening the centre was to bring services closer to the population. “Our main objective is to make water and electricity accessible to citizens as well as availing them with opportunities to generate income,” he explained. RECO and RWASCO connected water and electricity to the community centre and school where orphans and underprivileged can also access internet centre and market. “The criteria we used to choose Nyarugunga sector for this project is that this sector has a high number of genocide survivors, orphans and ex-combatants who are not able to take care of themselves. “So we hope that this community centre will provide them with an opportunity to improve their lives,” Muyange said.The Mayor of Kicukiro District, Paul Jules Ndamage, said the centre will go a long way in financially empowering the community. He added that many people in the sector didn’t have access to clean water therefore at risk from waterborne diseases. “The community centre has brought safe water facilities closer to the people of Nyarugunga, which means that our people will no longer have to fall sick due to waterborne diseases and spending their little money on hospital bills,” Ndamage said. The chief guest at the ceremony, the State minister for Water and Sanitation, Colette Uwineza Ruhamya, commended the work done by RECO and RWASCO and requested the residents of Nyarugunga to take good care of the facilities that they had been offered. “This opportunity that has been extended to them should be utilized to the full, so that at least within a year, we can find a significant change,” she said.
