Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) has extended the deadline for motor vehicle ownership transfers and de-registration to June 30, giving vehicle owners more time to regularise their documentation and comply with transport regulations. In an announcement issued on Monday, May 4, the tax authority urged all motor vehicle owners yet to complete the process to do so within the extended period to avoid inconvenience. ALSO READ: Nearly 500 owners risk losing vehicles over incomplete transfers “We take this occasion to inform those who provided information on challenges encountered while trying to complete motor vehicle ownership transfer that we are actively resolving these cases and will provide updates as progress is made,” the authority said in the notice. The extension follows an earlier directive issued in late January in which RRA, working with the Rwanda National Police, gave nearly 500 registered vehicle owners a 30-day ultimatum to finalise ownership transfers for vehicles whose records remained unresolved. At the time, the authority warned that failure by registered owners to cooperate could result in ownership rights being transferred to current holders based on evidence such as sale agreements and other supporting documents. The bid to fast-track vehicle ownership transfer is part of broader efforts to streamline vehicle registration records and strengthen compliance with road transport regulations. Officials have previously said incomplete ownership records create legal uncertainty and can complicate tax collection, traffic law enforcement, and accountability in cases involving traffic offences or criminal investigations.
