BRALIRWA Commemorates 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rubavu and Kigali

Local beverage manufacturer BRALIRWA has observed the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi by paying tribute to former employees who lost their lives in the tragedy at both its locations in Rubavu and Kigali. The commemoration events brought together BRALIRWA’s management team, employees, survivors’ associations, families and friends of victims, as well as representatives from local government, Ibuka and Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE). Through moments of reflection at both Nyanza and Gisenyi Genocide Memorial centres, participants paid their respects by laying of wreaths in honor of those who lost their lives. As part of the event, the participants held a walk to remember followed by a speaker line of Ibuka dialogue, survivors’ testimonies as well as keynote speeches that further contributed to the importance of reflection and reinforced the responsibility to preserve history. The ceremonies hold a special significance for BRALIRWA, as they pay respects to their former colleagues who were among the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Their lives continue to be respectfully acknowledged as part of the company’s history. In his remarks at the Gisenyi Genocide Memorial, the Mayor of Rubavu District, Prosper Mulindwa, underscored the importance of remembrance, indicating that it carries a responsibility to ensure such atrocities never happen again. This responsibility, he observed, goes beyond words and requires concrete actions, calling on individuals and institutions to actively stand against anything that promotes division. He expressed his appreciation to BRALIRWA, noting that the company’s participation represents a meaningful and valuable contribution to the nation’s efforts in commemoration. The Managing Director of BRALIRWA Plc, Ms. Ethel Emma-Uche, spoke about the significance of the occasion for BRALIRWA, stating “We remember our former colleagues who were among the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. We honor their lives and we extend our heartfelt comfort to their families and loved ones during this period of commemoration.” She further highlighted the company’s responsibility in fostering a working environment guided by fairness, respect and care for one another. The Executive Director of Memory and Genocide Prevention at the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE) highlighted the importance of commemoration as a pillar for national healing and prevention. She underscored the importance of remembrance in ensuring that history is preserved and that its lessons continue to guide current and future generations. The commemoration activities concluded with a renewed call to honor the past through responsible action today, ensuring that the lessons of history continue to guide our collective future.
