The upcoming psychological drama A Blue Butterfly is set to film its final scenes in Kigali, bringing an international cast and crew to Rwanda as the project nears completion. Directed by Nigerian filmmaker C.J. “Fiery” Obasi, the film stars Steve Toussaint and Sanaa Lathan, alongside Lucian Msamati, Anton Lesser, and Rwandan actress Eliane Umuhire. Production has already wrapped in London, with Kigali now confirmed as the final filming location—once again placing Rwanda on the radar of international productions. At its core, A Blue Butterfly is a character-driven story that follows a man, played by Toussaint, who lives in emotional isolation, weighed down by guilt. Working as a limousine driver, he remains detached from the world until a chance encounter with an actress, portrayed by Lathan, begins to shift his perspective. The film explores themes of trauma, survival, and the search for redemption, unfolding through intimate character interactions rather than large-scale spectacle. Toussaint, who also wrote the screenplay, grounds the narrative in introspection and emotional depth, while Obasi brings his distinctive storytelling style to the direction. The project also marks Obasi’s return to feature filmmaking following his acclaimed Mami Wata (2023), which premiered at Sundance and screened at major international festivals. The film was selected as Nigeria’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and earned nominations at both the Independent Spirit Awards and the NAACP Image Awards.
