The number of Rwandans returning from eastern DR Congo has reached 7,853 since 2025, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management. The latest group of 217 people, mostly women and children, crossed on Friday, April 24, through La Corniche One Stop Border Post in Rubavu town. ALSO READ: Returnees from DR Congo praise Rwanda’s safety Janvier Dushimana, 28, is among the returnees who had been stranded in Kitshanga, Masisi Territory, and is now returning to his home in Rubavu District. “I am returning home after many years in Congo,” he said after crossing into Rwanda with his Congolese wife who is pregnant. “I have been living in difficult conditions and was unable to come back to my country due to militias.” Authorities in Rubavu District welcomed the returnees, describing their arrival as an important step toward supporting the country’s development. “They will contribute to the continued progress of our country,” stated Deogratias Nzabonimpa, Rubavu District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development. He also encouraged the returnees to take their children to school. The group will be accommodated at the Kijote Transit Center in joining others who have arrived since 2025.
