Newly established APR Cycling Club has launched a nationwide talent identification program targeting promising male cyclists aged between 14 and 16 years. The search began in Musanze on Tuesday, April 14, and will run until Monday, April 20, with daily sessions scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A total of 31 youngsters took part in the selection event held at Avenue Mikeno in Musanze, competing in a race designed to assess their cycling ability. At the end of the trials, 10 standout riders were selected. Speaking to Times Sport, club president King Kayondo said the chosen cyclists will eventually be integrated into the team alongside four or five experienced riders. “APR Cycling Club has launched a program to identify and nurture young talent. We started in Musanze, where 10 children who showed strong potential were selected,” Kayondo said. The initiative builds on groundwork that began in August 2025, when the club’s management started working closely with FERWACY, months after the army leadership announced plans to establish cycling and karate teams. Kayondo emphasized that the project goes beyond competition, focusing on education, physical development, and healthcare support for the young athletes. “These children will continue with their education. This initiative is not only beneficial to APR but also contributes to the future of sports in Rwanda. We are following all legal procedures to build a structured team that will compete at different levels,” he said. Eligible participants—born between 2010 and 2012—are not required to own bicycles or have prior cycling experience. However, they must present a school ID or birth certificate and be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The club plans to expand its roster to at least 20 riders in the future, with intentions to include female cyclists. For now, the focus remains on recruiting between 12 and 15 young talents. The talents search is scheduled as follows: April 15: Rubavu (Stade Umuganda) April 16: Huye (Stade Huye) April 17: Rwamagana (St. Thérèse Clinic) April 18: Bugesera (Youth Center) April 19: Kigali (Amahoro Stadium Parking)
