Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has confirmed the arrest of Daniel Ndamyimana, the Executive Secretary of Bugarama Sector in Rusizi District, over allegations related to denial and distortion of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. ALSO READ: Genocide ideology cases drop during Kwibuka week RIB spokesperson Thierry Murangira said the suspect is being investigated after allegedly proposing that the commemoration of the Genocide be held on April 6, contrary to the official start date of April 7. “He wanted the commemoration to be held in that sector on April 6,” Murangira said, noting that this deviates from the nationally recognised date marking the beginning of the commemoration period. According to Murangira, preliminary investigations indicate that Ndamyimana initially claimed the proposal was made at the request of Genocide survivors in the sector. He is suspected of genocide denial and distorting the truth about the Genocide against the Tutsi with intent to mislead the public. “The investigation is ongoing to clarify what he referred to as his ‘emotions’,” Murangira said. “We are still examining why he sought to have the commemoration held on April 6.” While the case was confirmed on Tuesday, April 14, RIB indicated that the suspect had been in custody since April 11.
