Journalists were among more than one million people killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The dozens of men and women, who worked for various media outlets, were targeted and killed—some for their profession, others simply for who they were. The journalists were remembered on Friday, April 10 as part of 32nd commemoration of the Genocide that claimed more than one million. Below is a list of names of the slain journalists and media houses they worked for. ORINFOR At the public broadcaster ORINFOR, several journalists were killed: Tharcisse Rubwiriza, Médard Mwumvaneza, Cyprien Gasana, Claver Karake, Gracien Karambizi, Viateur Karinda, Jean Baptiste Rudahangarwa, André Sebanani, Callixte Kalisa, Emmanuel Nsabimana, Jean Bosco Bucyana, Felix Mbunda, Jean Claude Munyarigoga, and Eudes Nshimiyiryo. Le Partisan At Le Partisan newspaper, Aphrodice Habineza was killed. Le Tribune du peuple This publication lost Eugène Mukama, Wilson Hategekimana, Eugène Gakwaya, and Jean Claude Rugaju. Le Flambeau At Le Flambeau, Obed Bazimaziki, Charles Karinganire, and Gilbert Munana were killed. Rafiki Octave Kayihura and Alexis Ntaganzwa, working with Rafiki, were killed during the Genocide. Kinyamateka At Kinyamateka, the Genocide claimed the lives of Sylvestre Nkubiri, Clement Muganza, Beduwa Kayinamura, and Anastase Seruvumba. Le Soleil Marcelin Kayiranga, Jeanne d’Arc Mukamusoni, and Prisca Burasa, who worked with Le Soleil, were also killed during the Genocide. Isibo Néhémie Mureramanzi, who worked with Isibo, was killed during the Genocide. Kanyarwanda At Kanyarwanda, Joel Nkundimana and Donat Mutesa were killed. Kanguka At Kanguka, Vincent Rwabukwisi and Wellars Mbaraga were killed. Kiberinka Vincent Shabakaka, Aloys Nyimbuzi, and Théotime Kamanayo, who worked with Kiberinka, were killed during the Genocide. Rwanda Rushya Martin Kamurase, Joseph Mudatsikira, and André Kameya, who worked for Rwanda Rushya, were killed. L’Observateur Bernard Munyakazi, a journalist with L’Observateur, was also killed. Freelancers Independent journalists were not spared. Those killed include Sixbert Mbuguje, Winifrid Mukamana, Emmanuel Rukundo, Emmanuel Rutsindura, Alphonse Rutsindura, Claude Rwemarika, and Felix Twagirumungu.
