Rwanda has stepped up efforts to empower consumers and strengthen market trust through a nationwide campaign promoting safer products and higher service standards, as the country joins the global community in celebrating World Consumer Rights Day 2026. Observed annually on March 15, globally, this year’s theme “Safe Products and Quality Services, Confident Consumers,” came at a time when increasingly complex markets, digital services, and financial products are exposing consumers to greater risks, underscoring the need for stronger awareness, regulation, and accountability. At the national level, the commemoration is led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM) through the Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA), in collaboration with key stakeholders including the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), Association of Microfinance institutions in Rwanda (AMIR), civil society organisations, and private sector actors. The 2026 theme highlights the critical role of product safety and service quality in building consumer trust and fostering sustainable economic growth. As markets become increasingly complex, with expanding digital services, financial products, and supply chains, consumers face heightened risks ranging from unsafe products to misleading information and poor service delivery. Strengthening consumer awareness, regulatory enforcement, and accountability mechanisms has therefore become more important than ever. National awareness campaign to strengthen consumer protection gains momentum A nationwide consumer awareness campaign has been rolled out throughout March 1 to 31, 2026, featuring media engagements, community outreach, and public sensitisation activities. These initiatives aim to empower consumers with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, while encouraging businesses to uphold transparency, fairness, and quality standards. World Consumer Rights Day is traditionally celebrated every year on March 15, serving as a global platform to raise awareness on consumer protection and empowerment. This year, however, the official national celebration was held on Wednesday March 18, in Kicukiro as March 15 fell on a weekend. The event brought together government institutions, regulators, private sector actors, civil society, and development partners to reaffirm their shared commitment to promoting safe products, quality services, and strengthened consumer protection systems across Rwanda. AMIR leads week-long drive to strengthen financial services consumer protection As part of these national efforts, the Association of Microfinance Institutions in Rwanda (AMIR) conducted a Consumer Week Mobilization Campaign from March 16 to 19, 2026, focusing specifically on consumer rights in financial services. Implemented under the SERVE Project, the campaign was carried out in partnership with RICA, local authorities, and partner microfinance institutions. Activities took place across Rubavu, Gakenke, Huye, and Ngoma districts, engaging more than 800 youth-led micro and small enterprise (MSE) owners. The initiative focused on strengthening awareness in key areas, including: Consumer protection and rights in financial services Responsible use of financial products such as loans and savings Financial literacy and informed decision-making Quality standards and transparency in service delivery The campaign created a platform for interactive dialogue between consumers, financial institutions, and regulators, enabling participants, particularly youth entrepreneurs; to better understand how to safely and effectively use financial services to grow their businesses. Through practical learning sessions and real-life discussions, participants gained valuable insights into navigating financial services safely and confidently. This initiative contributes to broader national efforts to build a transparent, inclusive, and consumer-centered financial sector, aligned with Rwanda’s development agenda and financial inclusion goals. As Rwanda continues to promote consumer rights across sectors, stakeholders reaffirm that informed consumers, responsible businesses, and effective regulation are the foundation of a trustworthy and resilient marketplace.
