The East African Community has appointed Ambassador Stephen Patrick Mbundi of Tanzania as its new Secretary General, succeeding Veronica Nduva, the first woman to lead the bloc’s secretariat since June 2024. The appointment was made during the 25th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State. Mbundi is a senior diplomat and government official with over 28 years of professional experience. ALSO READ: Museveni takes over EAC chairmanship Before his appointment as EAC Secretary General, he served as Permanent Secretary in Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, where he was responsible for EAC-related affairs. He played a key policy and administrative role in Tanzania's foreign relations, particularly in matters related to regional integration and cooperation within the regional bloc. Throughout his career, Mbundi has collaborated with various EAC organs, development partners, and private sector organizations to advance regional integration. He has also engaged extensively with counterparts from EAC Partner States to address and resolve challenges hindering the free movement of trade and people.
