Veteran coach Cheikh Sarr has been appointed head coach of the Senegal women’s national basketball team. The 57-year-old returns to the sidelines five months after quitting Rwanda job in September 2025. He replaces Otis Hughley Jr., who led the Lionesses at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan. Sarr previously coached Senegal at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and now takes charge ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Puerto Rico (March 11–17). During his tenure, Rwanda won bronze at the 2023 FIBA AfroCAN, while the women finished fourth at the 2023 Women’s AfroBasket. However, winless outings for both men’s and women’s teams at the 2025 AfroBasket tournaments in Angola and Cote d’Ivoire ultimately cast doubt over his future, leading to his departure in September, bringing his four-year spell to an end. His contract was due to expire in March 2027 but he quit the job by mutual consent.
