Rwanda's Irembo scoops global GovTech award

Rwanda has won the Best Government Service in the World award at the GovTech Prize 2026, in recognition of Irembo, the country’s flagship digital platform that allows the public to access hundreds of public services online. The award was presented during the World Government Summit in Dubai and received on behalf of the Government of Rwanda by Ambassador John Mirenge and Estelle Kayitesi, Head of Policy and Partnerships at Irembo. ALSO READ: Irembo applications set for upgrade as govt cuts document uploads The GovTech Prize recognizes governments that are using technology to improve the delivery, accessibility and efficiency of public services, according to the Rwandan embassy in UAE. Irembo was recognised for transforming how citizens access government services by moving processes that were once manual and time-consuming onto a single digital platform. Launched in 2015, Irembo is Rwanda’s national e-government platform developed by Irembo Ltd in partnership with the Government of Rwanda. The platform allows citizens and residents to access government services online using a phone or computer. ALSO READ: IremboGov: Your homeland, just a click away Through Irembo, users can apply for services such as birth certificates, driving licences, land services, criminal records, health insurance payments, visas, and civil registration documents, among others. Payments can be made digitally through mobile money, bank cards and other electronic channels. The platform was created to reduce bureaucracy, cut long queues in public offices, improve transparency, and make government services more accessible, especially for citizens in remote areas. Today, Irembo connects dozens of public institutions and serves millions of users, playing a central role in Rwanda’s digital transformation agenda and its push towards efficient, citizen-centred public service delivery.
