Rwandan football fraternity is mourning the death of former Amavubi full-back Jean-Bosco Uwacu, who passed away after an illness at the age of 37. Uwacu’s death was confirmed by his family on Monday, January 19. A former player for several top-flight Rwandan clubs, Uwacu featured for ATRACO (now defunct), APR FC, Police FC and Etincelles. At the time of his illness, he was serving as assistant coach at Sunrise FC. According to a family member, Uwacu suffered a hand infection in October 2025, after which his condition worsened and he developed memory problems that left him unable to remember anything. Born in Rubavu, Uwacu was widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation in Rwandan football, earning respect for his discipline and consistency on the pitch. Between 2020 and 2022, he was also involved in football development initiatives at Dream Team Football Academy.
